Winter is a season of recovery and preparation. - Paul Theroux *** Important! Sunday, December 27, Moderate day hike, Ramapo Lake/Van Slyke Castle, Oakland NJ
Located in Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Ramapo Lake is a popular hiking destination for locals and travelers alike. Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome. We will hike approximately 5.5-6.5 miles for 4+ hours on moderate terrain. There will be some moderate rock scrambling near the start and maybe a small stream to cross. (http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/ramapo.html)
PLEASE WEAR A MASK AND SOCIAL DISTANCE, THANK YOU!
We will loop up and around counterclockwise to climb Fox Mountain, and visit VanSlyke Castle. On a clear day the NYC skyline is visible from the lookout. We will then continue south and descend to the lake, where it is relatively flat and easy, and then return on the rocky blue trail.
Meet in the lower parking lot on Skyline Drive just north of I-287.
Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome. If the owner and dog have not hiked with us before, the owner must contact the host for permission. Dogs should be kept on a 6ft leash during the hike.
Dress in light synthetic or wool layers (give up the cotton), wear hiking boots or an outdoor type shoe for the rocky trails, wool socks, and bring lunch or energy snacks with about 1-2 liters of water. Some sections of the trail may be icy or muddy, so a Gore-tex/waterproof boot is recommended. Bring a headlamp, just in case! 😉.
If the trails are icy or have packed snow, wearing Microspikes (https://kahtoola.com/product/microspikes/) or another type of traction device on your boot for ice and packed snow is highly recommended.
