Campers' Group Bulletin - Fall 2022

Spring is beautiful, and summer is perfect for vacations, but autumn brings a longing to get away from the unreal things of life, out into the forest at night with a campfire and the rustling leaves.

September 30-October 2, Camping Trip, Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area, Highlands NJ
Join Campers' Group for a summertime camping trip at the Jersey Shore! We will be camping at the Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area. We have reserved sites in the A, B and C loops at Camp Gateway. Bathrooms and a potable water source are nearby. There are no showers at the campsites. Public showers are located at the nearby Sandy Hook beaches. Sandy Hook itself contains historic areas and other attractions, including the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Fort Hancock, several beaches, Sandy Hook Bay kayaking, bike paths, and nature trails. Various maps are available here. Nearby are the Jersey shore communities of Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach and Long Branch. Asbury Park and Red Bank are a short drive. RSVPs are per tent, not per person. When you RSVP on Meetup please post a comment indicating who else will be in your tent, if anyone. Additionally, Sandy Hook charges a $15 entrance fee per vehicle. One car is allowed to park at each site, and there is overflow parking within a short walk, however, we hear the parking lot fills quickly on weekends. You may have to park remotely if you leave your spot, or arrive on Saturday. Carpooling and tent sharing is encouraged. Click here for ferry service from NYC. There are very limited provisions at Sandy Hook. Please have everything you need before arriving on the island. As this will be our first time in this campground we may not be able to answer all your questions. Pets are not allowed on our sites. You are encouraged to visit this Sandy Hook website for any questions you may have. Also, find information on the latest alerts and conditions here. Please note that we cannot control the weather, traffic, rare beach closings, or the occasional wait to get into a crowded park on the weekends. We strongly recommend that you carpool, arrive on Friday, and as early as possible.
RSVPs are per tent, not per person. To reserve a spot, pay $58.98 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.
Texts only for Cybill, please.

Sunday, October 30, Day Hike, Wells Mills County Park, Waretown NJ
This can be a moderately easy loop hike, approximately 8.5 miles with little (324 ft) elevation gain, or the shorter 3.3 mile (114 ft) Estlow Green Trail loop (whatever the group is up for), or we can split into 2 groups and do both. This is an easy trail surface of pine and sand, some boardwalks over wet areas, and minor rolling hills. It's a great intro to the terrain of the Pine Barrens that also travels through Atlantic white cedar swamps. A steady pace will be kept with planned short breaks.
Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome. If the owner and dog have not hiked with us before, the owner must contact the host for permission. Dogs should be kept on a 6ft leash during the hike.
Dress in light synthetic or wool layers (give up the cotton), wear hiking boots or an outdoor type shoe for the rocky trails, and bring lunch or energy snacks with about 1-2 liters of water. Always bring a headlamp, just in case! 😉.

Sunday, November 6, Day Hike, Terrace Pond Blue Loop, Hewitt NJ
This is a moderately strenuous 8 mile loop hike with approximately 1300 ft of elevation gain, from Warwick Turnpike on the Bearfort Ridge to Terrace Pond and back. We'll enjoy beautiful and excellent varied terrain, and nice views of Greenwood Lake and NYC. There is a decent amount of rugged up/down and rock scrambling. A steady pace will be kept with planned short breaks, and a lunch break, probably near Terrace Pond.
Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome. If the owner and dog have not hiked with us before, the owner must contact the host for permission. Dogs should be kept on a 6ft leash during the hike.
