Campers' Group Bulletin - Summer 2023

All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer... one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends, and delightful doing, come as near perfection as anything can come in this world. - L.M. Montgomery

June 23-25, Camping Trip, Hickory Run State Park, White Haven PA
Join us and camp on one of the family sites we have reserved in this popular park. With several activities available and much natural beauty, Hickory Run State Park has been one of our favorite spots for many years. Pocono Whitewater will take us on the Lehigh River between White Haven and Jim Thorpe. A spectacular gorge and class 2-3 rapids should make this a memorable weekend!
Enjoy hiking and waterfalls near the campground, and swimming in Sand Spring Lake. Hiking the provocatively named Shades of Death Trail is far more enjoyable than the name implies! Tranquil Mud Run is just a few miles from the campground, and beautiful Hawk Falls is also close by. For a longer hike, you can go to Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark that was created by frost heave during the last ice age. There is also bicycling on the nearby Lehigh Gorge State Park Trail. Because of limited physical space on these campsites, we are having everyone RSVP for a tent spot, not per person, so tent sharing is encouraged, but not required. Flush toilets and hot showers are in the campground. RSVPS ARE PER TENT, NOT PER PERSON.
To reserve a spot, please RSVP on the meetup.com page for this event.

July 1-4, Camping Trip, Swartswood State Park, Newton NJ
Come and hike the trails, or walk to the beach to swim in Lake Swartswood. The park rents canoes, rowboats and paddleboats, and the lake is stocked with fish. The area is also great for road cycling, or biking with hybrid and mountain bikes on the nearby Paulinskill Valley Trail. Horseback riding is also available nearby on the Trail. We've reserved shady but primitive group sites where we can listen to the bullfrogs at night in the nearby duck pond. 2 Port-o-Johns are at the sites, flush toilets and showers are at the lake; a 7 minute walk across the road past the main entrance. Quiet hours are 10 P.M. to 6 A.M.
RSVP and pay $29.90 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

July 14-16, Camping Trip, Upper Delaware River Camping Trip (Class I & II Rapids), Lackawaxen PA
Join us for a river camping adventure! This outing requires that you either have a whitewater capable canoe or kayak, or privately arrange with an outfitter to rent one. You will need to navigate class I or II rapids during the trip. Some experience is recommended. This is a car-camping trip, with day paddles on the river. This riverfront campground provides flush toilets and warm showers. RSVPs ARE PER PERSON.
You can join us for 1 or 2 nights, arrive on Friday or Saturday morning. Saturday we will most likely shuttle up to Narrowsburg and paddle the easy class I+ water back down to the campground. Sunday we may do a longer paddle downstream from the campground to Lackawaxen or Barryville, navigating class I & II rapids, then shuttle back.
ALL PADDLERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A PROPERLY FITTING PFD (life jacket) AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE WATER, ZIPPED AND BUCKLED SECURELY. NO EXCEPTIONS!
This section of the Delaware River contains mostly class I & class II rapids, and possibly some class II+ rapids depending upon the water level (TBD). It is best to have some river paddling experience, but everyone should be able to handle the easier paddle north of the campground.
This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT, however, a very poor weather forecast or poor river conditions may cause this trip to be cancelled or postponed.
RSVP and pay $68.50 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

July 21-23, Camping Trip, Rivers Bend Group Campground, Walpack Township NJ
Rivers Bend Group Campground is located on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River National Recreation Area, off Old Mine Road. Its close proximity to the Big Flatbrook Creek and the Walpack Bend of the Delaware River allows campers to enjoy the peacefulness of nature with easy access to outdoor recreational opportunities. Hike, swim or paddle, right from or near the campground!
We have reserved 3 rustic group campsites that include fire rings, picnic tables, bear proof trash containers and food lockers. These primitive group campsites are in a large open area with thick brush and trees around the edge, just above the Delaware river. Group site 4 is hammock-friendly.
RSVPS ARE PER PERSON
Potable water is available, but the pump could be difficult to use, so bringing your own water is recommended. There are vault toilets centrally located at the site. No showers. Pets are not permitted, except service dogs. The use or possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
RSVP and pay $35 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

July 28-30, Camping Trip, Camping and Jam Bands!, Newton NJ
Nestled in the foothills of rural Sussex County, The Great Divide is our gateway to forests, camping, recreation and music. There is a full lineup of local bands all summer long at this campground. This weekend we will see 3 jam bands, Diamond Eye Jack, Grateful Girls and Vera and the Force!
We have reserved several tent sites in the R Loop. The campground provides clean, modern restrooms with flush toilets and free, hot showers, plus a fully equipped laundry facility. There is also a private lake for fishing and boating, heated pool, and a full schedule of family-friendly activities; something for all campers. Check the campground's website or contact the event host for further details.
The Great Divide Campground has dozens of amenities and attractions.
Start and end times reflect the hours we are allowed to occupy the campsites. You are welcome to arrive any time after the start time on Saturday. RSVPS ARE PER PERSON, NOT PER TENT. When you RSVP, you are paying for 2 nights. The payment of $76 is for one person which will only cover the cost to camp with the group. During the weekend, we may share the cost of firewood, if needed.
Well-behaved dogs and their owners are welcome. If the owner and dog have not camped with us before, the owner must contact the host for permission before RSVPing. Dogs must get along with other dogs, be quiet, especially at night, and have proof of current rabies vaccination.
RSVP and pay $76 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

August 9-13, Kayaking/Camping Trip, Backcountry Paddling & Camping - Lake Lila, Adirondacks, Long Lake NY
This trip is a 5 day/4 night, or 4 day/3 night paddling & primitive camping adventure on Lake Lila in the Adirondacks. Most will head out on Wednesday to secure a great campsite, but others can join us on Thursday if necessary (we should be able to message the late-comers where we have camped), but it is highly recommended to paddle with us on Wednesday! *** You must carry your boat and all gear 0.3 miles from the parking area to the launch. ***
Lake Lila is a beautiful, secluded and primitive area with no roads nearby, and no motorboats allowed. Campsites are right on the water's edge, rustic (pit toilet and fire ring only) and first come first served (no reservations). Our plan is to find one of the best sites for a stay of 5 days/4 nights. There are islands to explore, beaches to visit and maybe other smaller lakes or rivers to venture to during our stay.
*There are options to rent a kayak or canoe. Please reach out if you need to do so and we'll provide the info.
Pack carefully! If kayaking in, pack very light, as if backpacking. If paddling a canoe, more equipment can be taken.

August 18-21, Camping Trip, Finger Lakes Camping!, Ithaca NY
Frothing waterfalls, jagged gorges and natural beauty in abundance are the highlights of a gorge trail day hike at Buttermilk Falls State Park in the popular Finger Lakes region of New York. Taking its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley toward Cayuga Lake, the park has a small lake, hiking trails through woodlands and along the gorge and rim, picnic areas, and playing fields. The lower portion of the park, which offers an easy view of the namesake Buttermilk Falls, the 165-foot cascade and last of 10 waterfalls along the creek, also has a natural pool and campground.
It is only 10 minutes to downtown Ithaca from the campground, and 20 minutes to Taughannock Falls State Park.
We have reserved tent/hammock-only campsites. Bathrooms and showers are available in the campground. RSVPs are per tent/hammock, not per person.
Pets are permitted in the camping area, but you must ask the host's permission to bring one if we have not met your pet before.
When you RSVP you must pay for the weekend, regardless of how many nights you can attend. Start and end times above reflect only the hours we are allowed to occupy the campsites. You are welcome to arrive any time Thursday, Friday or even Saturday, but we cannot occupy the sites until 3pm on Friday. Check-out is 11am on Monday. The payment of $43 is for one tent/car, which will only cover the cost to camp with the group. During the weekend, we may also share the cost of firewood, if needed.
RSVP and pay $43 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

August 25-27, Camping Trip, Promised Land State Park, Canadensis PA
We will be camping at several of the many wooded sites near the lake in the Pickerel Point camping area. Walk or drive to the beach and swim, or rent a canoe/kayak/rowboat and tool around Promised Land Lake. The ambitious can bicycle around the lake or explore the Bruce Lake Natural Area. The rest of us may follow the self-guided nature trail around Conservation Island. The campground has new facilities - hot showers and flush toilets. Each site has been graded with gravel, and accommodates only 2 tents each, so please share if possible. This recently redesigned campground also has newly paved and mostly assigned parking. One (1) parking space is assigned to each campsite, in the small lot by our campsite group. Overflow parking is within walking distance on the campground peninsula. Carpooling is recommended. To join, you must RSVP and pay $33 on the meetup page for this event.

August 25-28, Camping Trip, Crawford Notch, Mizpah Hut, Mt Jackson, White Mountains NH, Bartlett NH
We'll be camping at Dry River Campground, and also spending a night at Mizpah Hut in the White Mountains! This RSVP only pays for your campsite, NOT the AMC hut ($167 member, $201 non-member). Purchase a spot in the Mizpah Hut for Saturday August 26th here.
Intermediate to advanced hiking is available. Some trails can be accessed with a short walk from our campsites to trail heads. We have walk-in and car camping sites reserved at Dry River Campground for Fri/Sat/Sun night. The entire group will camp at Dry River, and some or all will summit Mt. Jackson on Saturday, then hike to and stay at Mizpah Hut Saturday night. We will hike back down to the road and be shuttled back to our campground on Sunday. This is not a backpacking trip to the hut, but you will need to carry all your day hike items, plus clothing, bed sheet or sleeping bag, food/snacks and water for the hike. The campground to the hut via Mt Jackson is approximately 7.1 miles, and just over 4000 ft of elevation gain. The climb back down to the road will be just under 2-1/2 miles. Learn more about the huts here.
RSVPs are per tent, NOT per person. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event.
Start and end times above reflect only the hours we are allowed to occupy the campsites. You are welcome to arrive any time Friday or Saturday. When you RSVP, you are paying for all 3 nights. RSVPS ARE PER TENT, NOT PER PERSON. The payment of $49 is for one tent, which will only cover the cost to camp with the group. During the weekend, we may also split the cost of firewood, if needed.

September 1-4, Labor Day Weekend Camping, Cedar Creek, Bayville NJ
We will be down near the shore for camping, paddling, and exploring this interesting area. RSVPs are per tent, not per person. 2 tents and 1 car are allowed per site. Additional parking is nearby. Our sites are dog friendly. Please confirm the breed and provide a rabies vaccination certificate for the office.
Cedar Creek is a truly unique paddling experience for newbies and experienced paddlers alike. The Cedar Creek water color is tea colored because of tannic acid from the roots of the cedars lining the river banks. A canopy of trees covers you as you paddle. You will not see a riff of white water, but you will experience a strong, steady current, flowing through twists and turns and jug handle bends. From its headwaters in Greenwood Forest Management Area to its mouth at Barnegat Bay, Cedar Creek provides the water required for cranberry culture and supplies a pure source of water for wildlife. Adjacent bogs and uplands provide examples of plants characteristic to the Pine Barrens. Almost 89% of the Cedar Creek drainage area is forested land. Habitats of this waterway, typical to the Pine Barrens, include Atlantic white cedar swamps, bogs (including cranberry bogs), pine and oak forests, and coastal salt marshes. Throughout this beautiful watershed, you will find wildlife and unique plant species. There is also some easy to moderate hiking in the area.
We have reserved all the sites in the C section, C1 - C15. They are campsites for tents or hammocks only. The sites have sandy soil, are forested and fairly private. RSVPs are per tent/hammock, not per person. Parking is limited to 1 car per site, but additional parking is available close by. There is a short walk to hot showers and restrooms. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event.
Cedar Creek Campground also rents kayaks and canoes, and will transport you up stream (6 miles only). After you finish paddling, there is no waiting for the van to shuttle you back. You simply arrive right back at the campground.
Kayak/canoe rates: http://cedarcreekcampground.com/kayak-canoe/#kayak
The campground will need to know prior to the trip if you will need to rent a kayak. You must call their office at 732-269-1413 to reserve a kayak and shuttle. This is only for the 1 hour paddle. We are making arrangements with another outfitter for a longer paddle, for those who are interested. Some of us may have an extra kayak and paddle to loan (but you must have your own PFD if not renting). Please bring them so we can create our own river trip (a length of our choosing).
Please pay $65 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.

September 8-11, Camping Trip, Indian Lake Islands, Indian Lake NY
Beautiful, wild, forested islands offering wilderness camping and some of the best recreational boating in the Adirondacks, Indian Lake Islands Campground is located on the southern shore of 4,365-acre Indian Lake. The opportunity to camp on an island or along the shore of Indian Lake makes this one of the most popular camping destinations in the Adirondacks. All of the large, well-forested campsites offer privacy. Indian Lake Islands Campground offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including canoeing/kayaking and boating, hiking, fishing, and picnicking.
There are plenty of canoes to be rented at the campground office on the mainland. There are also 2 double kayaks and 1 single that are first come first serve. It is approximately a 3-1/2 to 4 mile paddle from the boat launch to our island.
ALL PADDLERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A PROPERLY FITTING PFD (life jacket) AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE WATER. ZIPPED AND BUCKLED SECURELY. NO EXCEPTIONS!
We have reserved 3 campsites on an island north of Moose Island. When you RSVP, you will be given additional information on site numbers and exact island location. Each site has a picnic table and firepit, and is limited to 6 individuals. The exact number of tents allowed are to be determined. Only smaller tents will be allowed on this trip, no tents larger than 8' x 8'. Backpacking tents are preferred. Additionally, hammocks are allowed. RSVPs are per tent/hammock, NOT per person. Pit toilets are available at every site on the island. 2 shower/bath houses are available for use on the mainland at adjacent Lewey Lake Campground (just show your Indian Lake Island permit to be let in). Firewood can be purchased at the campground office or at a local vendor, and then will need to be transported, along with all water, across the lake to the campsites.
PLEASE RESPECT THE ISLAND HABITAT, AND FOLLOW A STRICT "LEAVE NO TRACE" POLICY: https://lnt.org/learn/7-principles.
It will be important to plan your packing carefully. If kayaking in, pack very light, as if backpacking. If paddling a canoe, more equipment can be taken, and a kayak can be easily towed. Here is a general and extensive camping checklist: https://files.meetup.com/3489162/camping_checklist.pdf
This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT, unless the host or organizer indicates otherwise.
To join, RSVP and pay $59.90 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.
