Campers' Group Bulletin - Summer 2022

Everything good, everything magical, happens between the months of June and August. - Jenny Han (September too!)

June 24-26, Camping Trip, Cedar Creek, Bayville NJ
We will be down near the shore for camping, paddling, and exploring this interesting area. RSVPs are per tent, not per person. 2 tents and 1 car are allowed per site. Additional parking is nearby. Our sites are dog friendly. Please confirm the breed and provide a rabies vaccination certificate for the office.
Cedar Creek is a truly unique paddling experience for newbies and experienced paddlers alike. The Cedar Creek water color is tea colored because of tannic acid from the roots of the cedars lining the river banks. A canopy of trees covers you as you paddle. You will not see a riff of white water, but you will experience a strong, steady current, flowing through twists and turns and jug handle bends. From its headwaters in Greenwood Forest Management Area to its mouth at Barnegat Bay, Cedar Creek provides the water required for cranberry culture and supplies a pure source of water for wildlife. Adjacent bogs and uplands provide examples of plants characteristic to the Pine Barrens. Almost 89% of the Cedar Creek drainage area is forested land. Habitats of this waterway, typical to the Pine Barrens, include Atlantic white cedar swamps, bogs (including cranberry bogs), pine and oak forests, and coastal salt marshes. Throughout this beautiful watershed, you will find wildlife and unique plant species. There is also some easy to moderate hiking in the area.
We have reserved all the sites in the C section, C1 - C15. They are campsites for tents or hammocks only. The sites have sandy soil, are forested and fairly private. RSVPs are per tent/hammock, not per person. Parking is limited to 1 car per site, but additional parking is available close by. There is a short walk to hot showers and restrooms. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event.
Cedar Creek Campground also rents kayaks and canoes, and will transport you up stream (6 miles only). After you finish paddling, there is no waiting for the van to shuttle you back. You simply arrive right back at the campground.
Kayak/canoe rates: http://cedarcreekcampground.com/kayak-canoe/#kayak
The campground will need to know prior to the trip if you will need to rent a kayak. You must call their office at 732-269-1413 to reserve a kayak and shuttle. This is only for the 1 hour paddle. We are making arrangements with another outfitter for a longer paddle, for those who are interested. Some of us may have an extra kayak and paddle to loan (but you must have your own PFD if not renting). Please bring them so we can create our own river trip (a length of our choosing).
Please pay $62 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.

July 8-10, Camping/Rafting/Spartan Race, Hickory St Pk, White Haven PA
Camp with us on one of the family sites we have reserved in this popular park. With several activities available and much natural beauty, Hickory Run State Park has been one of our favorite spots for many years.
You must agree to participate in the Saturday whitewater rafting (12 people maximum) and/or the Sunday Spartan Race (no limit) to attend this event. If we have campsite space left over after people confirm they are joining the Sat and Sun events then the remaining spots may be offered to those who wish only to camp, hike, or swim in or around the park.
We will raft the lower section of the Lehigh River between Rockport and Jim Thorpe, on Saturday only. A scenic gorge and class 2-3 rapids should make for a fun day. The rafting group will leave the campsite Saturday morning NO LATER THAN 9AM.
On Sunday, hopefully most of us will be participating in the Spartan Sprint, a 5K classic obstacle course racing experience. YOU MUST BUY YOUR OWN TICKET. The event is approximately $110, which must be paid separately by following this link. Use promo code INVITE10, and choose the afternoon 1:15 time slot. Purchase NOW, the time slot will sell out!
The Sprint combines relatively easy trail running with 20 obstacles, held on off-road terrain featuring water and mud. Climb walls, crawl under wire, traverse monkey bars, aim a spear throw, and more! It is recommended to arrive 1-1/2 hrs before our start time, to give us plenty of time to park, pick up our registration packets, drop our stuff at bag check, and get warmed up. The drive to the park where the race is being held is approximately 35 minutes. For a 1:15pm start we should leave the campground NO LATER THAN 11AM.
To join the camping trip, you must RSVP on the meetup page for this event.

You can also fish from the boat launch near the campsite (NJ fishing license required). Hikers can climb up to the Appalachian Trail, and Sunfish Pond, an unspoiled glacial lake, or visit the Mohican Outdoor Center for nearby swimming or lake boating on Catfish Pond. On one or more mornings, we may plan a moderately strenuous hike (TBD), or an easy to moderate paddle on the river. Chemical toilets are close to the site, flush toilets and showers are in another part of the park. Quiet hours are 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. Alcohol is not permitted in NJ State Parks.

July 29-31, Music Festival and Camping, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Goshen CT
Join us to celebrate a 3 to 4-day community of folk music and dance! Arrive on Wednesday after 1pm for early camp set up, Thursday for Pre-Fest, or Friday any time.
Thursday: PreFest Tastings Day and Farmer's Market. (You can also arrive on Wednesday after 1pm to set up with Gabi to get the best camping spots.)
Falcon Ridge Folk Festival performances take place on several stages. The Main Stage features headline acts throughout the festival, including a songwriter "swap" on Friday nights, and a yearly showcase series of between twenty and thirty new or up-and-coming artists from noon to five on Friday afternoon; it is the only outdoor stage on which music continues after dark.
Across the festival grounds, the Workshop Stage features smaller-scale, generally acoustic performances around various themes throughout the day, often with several artists or groups playing "in the round". Family-oriented musical performances and other family-friendly fare, such as puppet shows, clowning and mimes like Hoopoe, also take place on the Family Stage throughout the daylight hours of the festival.
There is also a large Dance Tent that features various group and partnered dance styles until 2:00 AM.
In the evenings after the official performances are over the music continues at informal "campfires" and unofficial performance tents scattered throughout the camping areas.
Although children are welcome, please keep in mind this is a free-spirited music event with parties!
To reserve a camping spot with our group, RSVP and pay $3.39 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.

August 18-21, Camping Trip, Robert H. Treman State Park, Ithaca NY
Enfield Glen is the scenic highlight of Robert H. Treman State Park. This is an area of rustic beauty with craggy gorges and winding trails bearing "fire and brimstone" names like 115ft tall Lucifer Falls and Devil's Kitchen. Come explore the historic Gristmill with interpretive signs. The park features six trails with spectacular rocky gorges and wooded sections. A three mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail goes through the State Park. Popular among families for its lifeguarded swim area, the Lower falls at Robert Treman State Park is the most visible of the park’s dozen waterfalls. To truly experience the park, hike any of the trails that parallel Enfield Creek as it plunges almost 500ft through 2.2mi Enfield Glen.
Only 15 min to Ithaca, and 30 min to Taughannock Falls State Park.
We have reserved tent/hammock-only campsites. RSVPs are per tent/hammock.

August 25-28, Camping Trip, Cape Cod Camping, North Truro MA
We'll be camping on the outer Cape, just south of Provincetown! Enjoy the beach, hiking, and scenic bicycling in this beautiful area, or do some exploring in town.
We'll be camping, nestled in the pines, at North of Highlands Campground. It is only a short 1/2 mile walk to Head of the Meadow Beach. Fun and funky Provincetown is a 7 mile bike ride from camp. The campground provides clean bathroom and shower facilities, a laundry room, camp store and recreation hall.
We made the best effort to have our campsites grouped in one area, however, the campground determines final locations upon check-in. First come first served, and carpooling is recommended. RSVPs are per person, NOT per tent. The park allows only 4 adults per site. We have prepaid for 2 parking spots per site. Sorry, no campfires at the sites, but we can get a permit to have a campfire on the beach! Check-in prior to 9 PM on your scheduled date of arrival. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event!
To reserve a spot, pay $77.50 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.

September 2-5, Labor Day Weekend Camping Trip, Paradox Lake, Paradox NY
Paradox Lake is nestled on rolling hills of hardwood and creates the impression of being miles from the real world. With canoes and rowboats available for rent and abundant fish in the lake, this facility provides for camping at its finest. The hiking here is superb--get out and explore the forest.
Paradox Lake Campground is a comparatively small campground located on the shore of Dark Bay, which is on Paradox Lake. The lake itself is approximately 4-3/4 miles long.
Boating and fishing are popular, but the hiking here is particularly good. A network of trails south of the lake offers access to Crane, Oxshoe, Crab, Putnam, and Horseshoe Ponds; and to Pharaoh Lake and Pharaoh Mountain. The view from the summit of Pharaoh Mountain is worth the climb! On the opposite shore of the lake, accessible only by boat, a short trail leads to Peaked Hill and Peaked Hill Pond.
Amenities include campsites, hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, a recycling center, a boat launch site, a picnic area with pavilion rental and canoe and boat rentals.
To join, you must RSVP and pay on the meetup.com page for this event.

September 9-11, Camping Trip, Woodland Valley Campground, Phoenicia NY
Be prepared for a great hiking weekend! In the heart of the Catskills, Woodland Valley is a narrow rugged valley surrounded by some of the region's highest peaks: Panther, Slide, Cornell and Wittenburg. The campground serves as the trail-head for both the Slide-Wittenberg Trail (the Burroughs Range) and Valley-Denning Trail (which provides access to the Giant Ledge-Panther Mountain Trail). Please understand that to participate, you MUST be prepared with appropriate hiking boots, clothing, water, food, and know your own hiking ability. This area has significant elevation, so even if the distance does not seem great, the hikes may be more strenuous than others you may be used to with less elevation change. This is a car-camping trip with easy access to the campsites, not a backpacking trip. The campground is a 20 minute drive from Phoenicia, and 40 min from Woodstock. We have reserved small sites - only 2 tents are allowed per site. Find the campground map here. Quiet hours are 10 P.M. to 7 A.M. Flush toilets and hot showers are available in the campground.
To join, you must RSVP on the Meetup.com page for this event.

September 9-11, Camping Trip, Promised Land State Park, Canadensis PA
We will be camping at several of the many wooded sites near the lake in the Pickerel Point camping area. Walk or drive to the beach and swim, or rent a canoe/kayak/rowboat and tool around Promised Land Lake. The ambitious can bicycle around the lake or explore the Bruce Lake Natural Area. The rest of us may follow the self-guided nature trail around Conservation Island. The campground has new facilities - hot showers and flush toilets. Each site has been graded with gravel, and accommodates only 2 tents each, so please share if possible. This recently redesigned campground also has newly paved and mostly assigned parking. One (1) parking space is assigned to each campsite, in the small lot by our campsite group. Overflow parking is within walking distance on the campground peninsula. Carpooling is recommended. To join, you must RSVP and pay $35 on the meetup page for this event.

September 22-25, Camping Trip, Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague MD
Camp behind the dunes on this beautiful barrier island off the coast of Maryland. Wonderful wild ponies share the island with people! We have reserved 11 oceanside campsites for 4 nights. These are walk-in sites; vehicles can park near the site but campers will need to carry equipment on a boardwalk about 300 feet in to the dunes. Rent kayaks, canoes, and SUPs at the canoe/kayak rental lot, and paddle on the calm bay side of the island. This trip is a longer drive than most. Join us for the long weekend! Cold showers and chemical toilets in the national park, hot showers in the adjacent state park. $20 entrance fee per vehicle. To arrange carpooling, contact a trip leader ASAP.
To reserve a tent spot, pay $51.98 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.
