Sending Mail via Panix
To prevent Panix's mail servers from being used by spammers, we have
changed our SMTP (outgoing mail) servers to require authentication in
most cases. This means that you need to log in to send
mail, not just to receive it.
Do I need to use SMTP authentication?
You need to turn on authentication IF:
- you're hooked up to a cable modem or a
non-Panix DSL line, or
- if you're on the Internet from a hotel,
office, or public network (assuming the hotel or office isn't a
Panix customer themselves), or
- if you're dialing into Panix through most of
our dialup lines.
In other words, you usually need SMTP authentication, nowadays.
You don't need to use SMTP authentication if:
- your office network is using a Panix corporate
IP Internet connection (SDSL or T1), or
- if you're using an ISDN line and terminal
adapter to dial into Panix, or
- if you are using the Panix Webmail interface
to compose your messages.
How do I set up SMTP authentication in my mail program?
SMTP Auth is now available on all of our outgoing mailhosts.
We've tested our implementation of SMTP-Auth with several
programs, and it should work with almost everything out there.
We know for a fact that it works with the following:
- Outlook Express for Windows (5.0 to 6.0 inclusive)
- Outlook Express for Mac (5.02)
- Apple OS X Mail v1.2.3 (v551)
- Netscape 4.75 and up (Windows and Mac)
- Pine 4.40 (UNIX)
- MS Outlook 2000 and 2002 (Windows)
- Entourage 10.0 (Mac OS X 10.1)
- Mozilla 0.95 (UNIX, cleartext, no SSL
capability) and 1.x (Win/Mac/UNIX, SSL support added)
- Eudora 5.1 and up (cleartext at least)
We know that it doesn't work with the following:
- MS Outlook 97
- MS Outlook 98 (claims to have support, but
it doesn't seem to work)
- Eudora 5.0 and below
- Netscape versions below 4.75
If your mail program isn't on the lists, give it a try and let us
know! Send a summary to staff@panix.com and we'll add it
to the appropriate list.
Sure, but how do I set it up?
Oh, right. Our SMTP-Auth
Setup page gives click-by-click instructions for most popular
email programs.
If your program isn't listed on that page, here's the Panix-specific
info you'll need:
Set your outgoing mail server to:
mail.panix.com
- If your email address ends in
"@panix.com", just use your email address as the
username. (Your Panix login by itself will also work.)
- If your email address ends in
"@access.net", you need to enter your full email
address including the "@access.net" part.
- If you use cmail1.panix.com for your
incoming mail, you need to enter your full email
address as the username. If your mailbox has more than 1
address associated with it, call us for assistance.
- Use your regular Panix password as the
password.
- Some providers block port 25 on other
systems. If you can't use port 25, try port 2525 or port 587
instead.
- If you are using secure SMTP (that is,
SSL-wrapped SMTP) you should use port 465, unless you're using
Eudora, in which case you should use port 4650..
