Gail Collins is on some Very Strong Meds

gail Collins is suggesting that George W. Bush resign for the good of the country so that Barack Obama can start implementing his policies.

Ignoring the precedent, which is very bad, that it would set regarding presidents and serving out their their terms, the idea that Bush would resign, when he is already burrowing political appointees into the civil service and creating regulations in order to knee cap him is delusional.

George W. Bush is all about George W. Bush, and he believes that he is on a mission from God (which will hopefully take him to The Hague at some time), and the rejection of ego inherent in such an action, because it is an acknowledgment of his failure on a spectacularly grand scale.

It won’t happen.

I Can’t Wait for Bush and His Evil Minions&trade to Go

And I really hope that Obama uses the screw up on the time frame for the rules that Bush is issuing to reverse them.

Latest case in point:

The proposed rule would prohibit recipients of federal money from discriminating against doctors, nurses and other health care workers who refuse to perform or to assist in the performance of abortions or sterilization procedures because of their “religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

It should be interesting.

If he doesn’t reverse this one in the first week he’s sworn in……

Report: Hillary Clinton to Accept Offer of Secretary of State Position

At least that is the word from The Grauniad.*

We’ll see, but I’m still dubious.

*According to the Wiki, The Guardian, formerly the Manchester Guardian in the UK. It’s nicknamed the Grauniad because of its penchant for typographical errors, “The nickname The Grauniad for the paper originated with the satirical magazine Private Eye. It came about because of its reputation for frequent and sometimes unintentionally amusing typographical errors, hence the popular myth that the paper once misspelled its own name on the page one masthead as The Gaurdian, though many recall the more inventive The Grauniad.”

Did Howard Dean Just Deliver a Steaming Helping of F%$# You to Barack Obama?

Howard Dean gave an interview on the Senate’s cave to Lieberman, and said that the action was, “in the spirit of unification, which is what the President-elect wanted” and that, “He called the shots, and that’s fine.”

There are doubtless a more than a few people with steam pouring out of their ears right now, and it sounds like the good doctor just painted a target on Obama’s back.

IMHO, Obama deserves to catch grief over this. It’s clear that he figured that he wanted Lieberman in the tent pissing out, but he’s been in the tent, pissing in, for the past 4 years.

Hillary Clinton to Run State?

According to some well “placed sources”, yes Hillary is on the short list for Secretary of State.

This raises some interesting questions:

  1. What does this mean for an Obama foreign policy?
  2. What does this mean about the differences between Clinton and Obama on foreign policy in the primaries?
  3. Why is the Obama team suddenly leaking like a sieve, when it was so disciplined during the campaign?

I’m not sure what numbers 1 and 2 mean, but what number 3 means is that the Clintonistas on the transition team cannot keep their damn mouths shut.

This is a good reason to keep former Clinton staffers to a minimum in his administration.

Barack Obama Can Kiss My Shiny Metal Ass

Only a week after the election and Barack Obama is doing something very stupid, if the reports that Obama told Reid that he wants Lieberman to remain in the Democratic caucus are accurate.

Joe Lieberman has always been a hypocrite and sanctimonious, but now he is on Jihad against the Democratic party for defeating him in the primary in 2006.

I understand the desire to keep him in the caucus, but if he is allowed to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee, he will use his powers to inflict damage on the Democratic Party generally, and Barack Obama in particular.

President elect Obama, I would suggest that you buy a clue with some of your left over campaign cash.

Now This is a Breath of Fresh Air

Well, it looks like President Elect Barack Obama has decided to tighten ethics rules, and it will hit the pentagon hardest, “No political appointees would be able to work regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration.”

It’s a very good start. It will have the effect of reducing the so called “Tron Triangle.”

Of course, you get the complaints:

“You can understand the motivation behind it, but it’s not clear that you will get the best and brightest people who understand what needs to be done to serve in the government. As you know previous administrations have had great difficulty attracting people under the existing guidelines,” a procurement expert with experience in and out of government told me this morning.

But the, “procurement expert with experience in and out of government,” is the problem, not the solution.

It’s this kind of self dealing that gets us a JSF that runs nearly $1/5 billion a plane.
