My Thoughts on Jena
I haven’t really commented on this, but I’ve gotten a couple of comments to the effect of, “Isn’t this a tempest in a teapot.”
The Answer is Hell No!!!
Let’s roll tape:
- Some black kids hang out under a “white” tree, and nooses are hung on it the next day.
- The principal wants to expel the f$#@s who did this, but the school board makes it a two f$#@ing day suspension.
- The black students decide to sit quietly under the tree as a non-violent protest.
- The police are called in, and the DA threatens the black kids (and it’s clear that is what he did) at a school assembly.
- Tensions are inflamed with at least two instances of groups of white kids beating down a black kid, no prosecutions.
- The same school board that allowed the noose hanging perps to walk refused to allow black students and parents to testify before them.
- In the fight in question, the kid who was beaten up, but is not even kept over night.
- The students involved in the fight are charged by the same DA who threatened them with attempted murder.
- The one student who has made it to trial maintains that he wasn’t even there, but his public defender refuses to call any witness and the all white jury convicts him of aggravated assault.
- That conviction has been overturned because an appellate judge basically said, “are you out of your f$#@ing mind charging this kid as an adult.”
You’re right, it’s just some uppity n***ers, no discrimination here.
Columbus Dispatch Uses Nazi Style Imagery
The Columbus Dispatch has just published a cartoon showing Iranians as cockroaches emerging from a sewer.
This is really something straight straight from Der Stürmer.
Glenn Sheller, chief bigot and moron Editorial Page Editor has replied that they are only depicting SOME Iranians as cockroaches, or to paraphrase, “We’re not saying that all Jews use Christian baby’s blood to bake Matzo, just some Jews.”
I’m so glad I have a daughter, so I can forbid her to marry him.

Bigots on Holiday
Normally, I am loath to comment on the internal workings of someone else’s religion, but in this case, I’ll make an exception.
NAIROBI, Aug. 30 — Two American priests were consecrated Thursday as Anglican bishops in Kenya, the latest in a string of conservative priests who are defecting to African churches in a dispute over gay clergy.
Bill Atwood of Texas and William Murdoch of Massachusetts left the Episcopal Church — the U.S. branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion — because it allows the ordination of gay priests.
People who feel that they have to hate in order to serve God should not be delivering your mail, much less seeing to your spiritual well-being.
Do Not Give to the ADL Until It Tells The Truth About the Armenian Genocide
Speaking as a Jew, and a Zionist, it is with no small amount of disappointment that I call on all people, regardless of faith to neither contribute to, or work with, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which was one the premier organizations opposing anti-Semitism.
They have formally come out in opposition to the congressional resolution decrying the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Empire during WW I. This Genocide is a FACT, and the idea that they would align themselves with those who would deny this fact is deplorable.
Their excuse is that modern Turkey, whose government had no role in the Genocide is an ally of Israel, and they do not wish to offend them. This is wrong and counter-productive.
What’s more, They fired a longtime ADL and activist because he acknowledged the genicide, which resulted in two of the regional board resigning.
Their statement follows, and I am willing to allow a representative to post here unedited to present their side.

Abraham H. Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today issued the following statement:In light of the heated controversy that has surrounded the Turkish-Armenian issue in recent weeks, and because of our concern for the unity of the Jewish community at a time of increased threats against the Jewish people, ADL has decided to revisit the tragedy that befell the Armenians.
We have never negated but have always described the painful events of 1915-1918 perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against the Armenians as massacres and atrocities. On reflection, we have come to share the view of Henry Morgenthau, Sr. that the consequences of those actions were indeed tantamount to genocide. If the word genocide had existed then, they would have called it genocide.
I have consulted with my friend and mentor Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and other respected historians who acknowledge this consensus. I hope that Turkey will understand that it is Turkey’s friends who urge that nation to confront its past and work to reconcile with Armenians over this dark chapter in history.
Having said that, we continue to firmly believe that a Congressional resolution on such matters is a counterproductive diversion and will not foster reconciliation between Turks and Armenians and may put at risk the Turkish Jewish community and the important multilateral relationship between Turkey, Israel and the United States.

Johnah Goldberg Calls for Return To Jim Crow Laws
Jonah Goldberg, the second most egregious example of hepotism taken to extremeshas an editorial in the Los Angeles Times in which he calls for a return to Jim Crow era voter qualification tests.
He asks, “Why not test people about the basic functions of government? Immigrants have to pass a test to vote; why not all citizens?”
Well, given that Fox News watchers are the least informed news consumers out there, this could benefit Democrats.
So let’s ask some basic questions of citizens:
- Which Branch of government has the exclusive right to delcare war?
- Give conditions in which executive privilege do not apply.
- How does the 13th amendment effect the powers of the states?
- Who appoints federal judges?
- Who appoints Ambassadors?
- Who appoints Cabinet Members?
Here re the answers: Senate, almost all of them (at least from the rulings from the Clinton days), that all rights in the constitution apply to the states too, Senate, Senate, Senate
The president does not appoint these folks, he nominates them, the senate appoints them.
Seriously the only person stupider than Goldberg is the idiot who suggest that he write OP/Eds for the LA Times.
Equal Opportunity Bigots: Republican Evangelicals Hate BOTH Catholics and Mormons
As much as I hate to agree with a group of bigots like Donohue’s Catholic league, and as much as I would like to feel a little bit of Schadenfreude about this as a Jew who has been routinely slandered by him and his little hate group, I have to agree with him here.
The Catholic bashing letter sent by the incredibly aptly named Huckabee Supporter Reverend Rude saying, “Huckabee is an evangelical. He has not learned how to speak to evangelicals; i.e. Bush 41 & 43. He is one of us. I know Senator Brownback converted to Roman Catholicism in 2002. Frankly, as a recovering Catholic myself, that is all I need to know about his discernment when compared to the Governor’s. I don’t if this fact is widely known among evangelicals who are supporting Brownback“.
It would appear that Tim Rude got his ordination from a cereal box, and his sense of right and wrong from either Father Coughlin or William Donohue himself.
It would be nice to dismiss him as just a crank supporter, but he is more than that. He is a campaign volunteer.
If Governor Huckabee is serious about disavowing this, he needs to take two steps:
- Kick the person off the campaign immediately.
- Get this person to publicly apologize.
- State clearly that no speeches or political events will be held at the Walnut Creek Community Church in Windsor Heights.

I read this story about Denmark evacuating Iraqi employees and their relatives in the IHT.
If the US behaves in a historically consistent matter, we will leave the tens of thousands of translators and other Iraqis hanging out to dry, where many will die, and more will become stateless refugees.
This is distressing for both ethical reasons, these people have risked their lives for us, and for pragmatic reasons, each time we do this, it makes it more difficult to recruit members of the indigenous population to help us.
The fact that we do not allow anyone who has already risked life and limb to help us entry into the US is largely an artifact of bigotry, and to be fair, the US military is far worse about this than the State Deartment, which is already making noises about getting its employees into the US.

Despite the victory for supporters of the legislation, the bill is not expected to be acted on any time soon in the Republican-led state Senate.
In opening the Assembly debate, Manhattan Democrat Daniel O’Donnell told his colleagues that civil union, a process permitted in neighboring Vermont, wasn’t good enough.
“It will not provide equality for people like me,” he said.
But Assemblyman Brian Kolb, taking note of “the nuns who taught me in grammar school” and his marriage in the Catholic Church, said he could not support the move.
“I do feel threatened. I do feel harmed,” said the Canandaigua Republican. “It’s a direct challenge to me and how I was brought up.”
Democrat Dov Hikind, an Orthodox Jew from Brooklyn, warned the measure could lead to other proposals he found objectionable.
“Maybe we should include incest in the bill and sort of deal with the whole package at one time,” said Hikind.”

I ordinarily don’t comment on the inner workings of churches, after all, I’m not Christian, but the politics here are more general.
Specifically, there has been an effort, spearheaded by non Episcopals right wing Evangelicals in the US and by Nigerian flaming bigot Bishop Peter Akinola.
The US Church provides much of the money for the world wide Anglican communion, and a schism would do far more damage to the worldwide communion than to the US one.

© 2007 The Associated PressNEW YORK — A key Episcopal panel defied conservatives Thursday, saying that Episcopal leaders should not cede authority to overseas Anglicans who want the church to halt its march toward full acceptance of gays.
The Episcopal Executive Council said that Anglican leaders, called primates, cannot make decisions for the American denomination, which is the Anglican body in the United States.
“We question the authority of the primates to impose deadlines and demands upon any of the churches of the Anglican Communion,” the council said in a statement, after a meeting in Parsippany, N.J.
The worldwide Anglican Communion has moved toward the brink of splitting apart since the Episcopal Church consecrated its first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, in 2003.
In February, Anglican leaders demanded that Episcopalians allow a panel — that would include Anglican conservatives from other countries — to oversee conservative Episcopal parishes in the U.S. Episcopalians also were given until Sept. 30 to unequivocally pledge not to consecrate another openly gay bishop or authorize official prayers for same-sex couples.
The Executive Council did not speak directly to the other demands in its statement Thursday, but said it has struggled “to embrace people who have historically been marginalized.”
“Today this struggle has come to include the place of gay and lesbian people and their vocations in the life of the church,” the council wrote.
The document approved by the 38-member panel of clergy and lay people is not the final word from the U.S. church. Episcopal bishops will give the denomination’s official response during a meeting Sept. 20-25 in New Orleans. The prelates strongly indicated at a March gathering that although they wanted to stay in the communion, they considered the demands unacceptable.

Legislators vote to defeat same-sex marriage ban

A proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage was defeated today by a joint session of the Legislature by a vote of 45 to 151, eliminating any chance of getting it on the ballot in November 2008. The measure needed at least 50 votes to advance.
The vote came after House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi, Senate President Therese Murray, and Governor Deval Patrick conferred this morning and concluded that they have the votes to kill the proposal. Cheers echoed in the State House when the vote was tallied.
“In Massachusetts today, the freedom to marry is secure,” Patrick told reporters after the results were official.
The three leaders – along with gay rights activists – spent the last several days intensely lobbying a dozen or more state representatives and state senators who had previously supported the amendment but signaled that they were open to changing their positions.
Because fewer than 50 of the state’s 200 lawmakers supported the amendment, it will not appear on the 2008 ballot, giving gay marriage advocates a major victory in their battle with social conservatives to keep same-sex marriage legal in Massachusetts.
