House of Saud Threatened UK With Terrorist Attacks If Bribery Was Investigated
The Guardian is reporting that the House of Saud threatened to help terrorists if the British government continued to investigate the bribes paid to Saudi Prince Bandar.
Saudi Arabia’s rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.
Previously secret files describe how investigators were told they faced “another 7/7” and the loss of “British lives on British streets” if they pressed on with their inquiries and the Saudis carried out their threat to cut off intelligence.
Prince Bandar, the head of the Saudi national security council, and son of the crown prince, was alleged in court to be the man behind the threats to hold back information about suicide bombers and terrorists. He faces accusations that he himself took more than £1bn in secret payments from the arms company BAE.
It should be noted that one of Bandar’s nicknames is “Bandar Bush”, because he is considered a sort of virtual member of the Bush clan by the family.
One of the future goals of any future US administration should be the removal from power of the House of Saud, and the imprisonment of those who held the reigns of power.

According to him, torture is fine to extract information, you just can’t use it in a sentence.
The depressing thing is that a deeply evil man such as this will live his life in luxury and comfort, and never be forced to confront the evil he supports.

This might also be titled, “Management victims who really need to join a union”.
You know, after 10 years of thinking of IBM as the antiChrist, I had finally replaced them with Microsoft, but this story has me reevaluating.
If they are not the antiChrist, they are at least a minor minion of Chtulhu.
As often happens, companies sometimes get spanked for not paying overtime to its workers, usually for being stupid. It happened to IBM, and they had to pay $65 million in back pay, and they reclassified about 7600 workers as “non-exempt”, meaning qualifying for overtime pay.
IBM took another step too, they cut the base pay of these workers by 15%.
If you do the math, they have to work 45 hours to earn what they previously made at 40.
And economists wonder why the average American is not satisfied with our “wonderful” economy.
BTW, I think you could make an argument that this is illegal retaliation. Talk to a class action lawyer.
In Other Unsurprising News, the MPAA is a Bunch of Lying Jackals*
Well, Harold Feld ads some fact checking to MPAA claims that, “40% of industry loses from internet piracy could be traced to file sharing at universities.”
LEK Consulting Services, which did the research for the MPAA, has now released its methodology, and based on their own numbers, the file sharing through university computing services is about 3%.
They used this study to justify attempts to use legislation to coerce universities to lock down their networks in very expensive ways, and to make the penalties for such activities worse than murder.

Torture for Thee but Not For Me
This is just so Orwellian. U.S. intelligence chief Mike McConnell is saying that if waterboarding were used against him, it would be torture, but refuses to say if this applies to other people.
The level of corruption, immorality, and cowardice of Bush and His Evil Minions™ simply buggers the mind.
“If I had water draining into my nose, oh God, I just can’t imagine how painful!” McConnell said in the article. “Whether it’s torture by anybody else’s definition, for me it would be torture.”
But he rejected a suggestion that he personally condemned the practice.

God, What Miserable Excuses for Human Beings
The thing that surprises me is that it’s that this is a Maureen Dowd Op/ED, and I’m not referring to her as a miserable excuse of a human being.
When I walked into the office Monday, people were clustering around a computer to watch what they thought they would never see: Hillary Clinton with the unmistakable look of tears in her eyes.
A woman gazing at the screen was grimacing, saying it was bad. Three guys watched it over and over, drawn to the “humanized” Hillary. One reporter who covers security issues cringed. “We are at war,” he said. “Is this how she’ll talk to Kim Jong-il?”
Another reporter joked: “That crying really seemed genuine. I’ll bet she spent hours thinking about it beforehand.” He added dryly: “Crying doesn’t usually work in campaigns. Only in relationships.”
Though let me say, that MoDo does not come across as any great testimony to humanity in this article either.

Fresh off of denying health care to the children of the working poor, Bush is now doing his level best to make sure that even poorer children die.
They have set impossible criteria, because they believe that people are poor because they are evil, and because they believe that the government helping poor people compounds that evil.
It’s the worst characteristics of 1500s Calvanism with a Texas twang.
Of course it also helps out the health insurance companies, who are big Republican donors. So you get more dead kids and more dirty insurance money, which is a win-win for Republicans.

Sally Quinn Is Concerned
Oh my, Sally Quinn is shocked.
It appears that the House of Representatives has passed a resolution (H.R. 847) declaring that “Expresses continued support for Christians in the United States . . . acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States . . . rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and expresses its deepest respect to American Christians.”
She expresses concern that, “Earlier this year the House also passed resolutions honoring Islamic and Indian holidays but nothing that so equated a single faith with America and Americans”.
Gee, I wonder who might have created this.
I don’t know, maybe those people who valued pleasant DC cocktail party conversation over real discussions of issues and real values.
Maybe those who favored phony protestations of faith as a good way to “play the game” of politics”, because, of course, inside the Beltway, where all the important people live, policies don’t matter.
Whether you are a Washington Post editor (or just married to one), a congressional page, a lobbyist, a reporter, or a Washington DC pundit, you make decent money, are guaranteed steady work, have excellent health care benefits, and a pretty good retirement package.
You can’t take policy seriously, it gets in the way of your parties. It makes conversation stilted. It makes people think that you aren’t a “very serious person”.

The former JAG officers say the regulation would end the uniformed lawyers’ role as a check-and-balance on presidential power, because politically appointed lawyers could block the promotion of JAGs who they believe would speak up if they think a White House policy is illegal.

Mitch McConnel Hates Our Troops
In an interview with the Grayson County News-Gazette, he said the following:
“I won’t tell you everything is great in Iraq; it is not. But we want to keep a steady flow of funds so that we don’t disrupt the military,” said McConnell. “Unfortunately, most of our friends on the other isle are having a hard time admitting things are getting better; some days I almost think the critics of this war don’t want us to win. Nobody is happy about losing lives but remember these are not draftees, these are full-time professional soldiers.
Gee…So I guess he thinks that “full-time professional soldiers” don’t have parents, or wives, or Fiancées, or children, or girl friends.
Or maybe he’s trying to say that it was OK for him, as a draftee in the late 1960s, do give another soldier a hand job in the shower to get out, because he was a draftee, nto a “full-time professional soldier”.
Oh, well.

This time, it’s a Consumer Products Safety Commission that is refusing a larger budget and staff, and its head taking what are morally, if not necessarily legally, bribes from manufacturers and they are so disinterested in protecting the consumer, it’s as if they were dosing the kids with date rape drugs themselves.
They consistently exceed the limits of my cynicism.

It appears that spammers are using sex to enlist human brain power to foil Captchas.

Basically, the spammers have, “created a Windows game which shows a woman in a state of undress when people correctly type in text shown in an accompanying image”.
The Captcha comes from a site that uses them to prevent spam, Yahoo comes to mind as a prominent example.
This is brilliant. Evil, but brilliant. If only this man could use his powers of technology and psychology for good, instead of evil.
Rampant Torture Makes Cases Against Real Terrorists Impossible
It now turns out that the CIA was so torture happy that the FBI is finding it difficult to make cases against major Al Queida operatives, and they are scrambling to find alternate evidence.
The FBI is quietly reconstructing the cases against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and 14 other accused Al Qaeda leaders being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, spurred in part by U.S. concerns that years of CIA interrogation have yielded evidence that is inadmissible or too controversial to present at their upcoming war crimes tribunals, government officials familiar with the probes said.
The process is an embarrassment for the Bush administration, which for years held the men incommunicado overseas and allowed the CIA to use coercive means to extract information from them that would not be admissible in a U.S. court of law — and might not be allowed in their military commissions, some former officials and legal experts said. Even if the information from the CIA interrogations is allowed, they said, it would probably risk focusing the trials on the actions of the agency and not the accused.
We are talking about folks like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who is so guilty that it boggles the mind, but Bush and His Evil Minions™ are so enamored with torture that they tainted the evidence.
I thought that it would be impossible for Bush to screw up a prosecution worse than that of Saddam Hussein, but they are now on a path to do so with KSM.
McConnell aide Smeared 12 Year Old Child In S-Chip Debate
BTW, go to the end, and see the two year old saved by S-Chip. The Republicans are going after her too.
The “pro family crowd” are claiming that here parents were “irresponsible” for having her when they were poor.
Even most Republicans think that S-Chip is a good idea, so they can’t argue the merits, so they are trying to slime children.
Of course, none of this would have an issue except for the fact that the reporters have have the email accusing the Forsts of fraud.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s spokesman acknowledged yesterday that he alerted reporters last week to questions bloggers raised about the financial circumstances of a 12-year-old boy Democrats had used to urge passage of an expanded children’s health insurance program.
But Don Stewart, the Kentucky Republican’s communications director, said he also wrote a follow-up e-mail later the same day that said a blogger he respected had determined that there was no story and that “the family is legit.”
Huh…That day? More like the next day, and late the next day at that.
Stewart said there was no effort by McConnell to discredit 12-year-old Graeme Frost, of Baltimore, or cast aspersions on the family.
“It would be kind of hard to ‘slime’ somebody when I was telling reporters there’s no story here and the family is legitimate,” Stewart said yesterday.
You sent an email around saying that they were welfare cheats. How on earth is that NOT an attempt to “slime”.
McConnell’s alleged role in depicting the Frosts as something other than what they claimed to be has been fodder for The New York Times op-ed page, bloggers and Democratic officeholders, among others.
Stewart’s comments were the first detailed explanation of the role McConnell’s office played in the controversy.
Matthew Miller, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said in an e-mail yesterday that “spreading false rumors about a 12-year-old boy is despicable for any reason.”
“No matter how McConnell’s office spins it now, the e-mail makes clear that they were part of the campaign to smear a child who had the nerve to stand up and say children’s health insurance shouldn’t be cut,” Miller said.

All this kid did was to tell the truth about what happened to him.
