I am a Bad Person

Natalie has an audition for a magnet program this morning, and I suggested that she keep the bling to a minimum, so that she does not distract from her performance.

Then I qualified my statement, saying, “Then again, I am an engineer giving fashion advice, which is a lot like Jared Loughner giving gun safety advice.”

I am not a good person.

I Now Know How The Daily Show Writers Feel…

The Mustache of Insanity

Because former recess appointee UN ambassador John Bolton is saying that he might run for President:

During recent appearances on Fox News, Bolton has been asked whether he would run for president. “Well, you know it’s a great honor when people ask me that question, and I have been asked that question,” Bolton said on Wednesday. “I don’t think anybody involved with politics should worry about that until after the elections this fall.”

He also said: “I’m not saying no. That’s right.”

This promises to be easier to ridicule, and even more funny, than the Freddie Thompson Clown Show presidential campaign of 2008.

I so want him to run.

Do you know that it’s been over 100 years since we elected a president with facial hair (Taft, 1908).

Hemlines Come Way Down, Stock Market to Follow

The latest from the Paris fashion scene

The New York Times reports that hemlines are falling this season, by a LOT, and Calculated Risk reminds us that, “in 1926, economist George Taylor suggested the “Hemline Index”; he observed that hemlines moved with stock prices”.

We are completely screwed.

More after break:

OK, that’s not the real picture, here are some of the actual pictures:

OK, these are the real skirts, and yes, we are screwed:

And here are the models, who raise the universal question, “Who the f%$# pissed in your Cheerios to make you look so unhappy?”:

Osama, Take Me Now!

Just when you thought that the fashion industry in general, and the makers of perfume in particular, could not get any more insane, they give us Vulva Original, a vagina scented perfume.

No, this is not a joke, it’s real, complete with a web site featuring a video which, for lack of a better term, climaxes in a man sniffing a bicycle seat.

Whiskey tango foxtrot?

You know, the supposition that certain backward religious nut-jobs make that our society is evil, corrupt, and irredeemably icky is becoming more and more plausible.

Spot the Cancer Victim

High heels and Bathing Suits? WTF?*

Actually, it’s a trick question, neither of the women have had cancer, they were just two contestants on the British reality show Make Me a Supermodel.

Guess which one the judges preferred?

Yes, they preferred the one on the right, Marianne Berglund, while the viewers preferred the 5’11” 154 pound Jen Hunter, who won the show, but then could only find employment with a “plus size” model agency.

As an FYI, their relative body mass indices (BMI) were 16.5, well into emaciated, and 21.5, slightly below the 21.75 mid point of the 18.5-24.9 normal index.

It should be noted that during the show, Hunter was rididuled by the judges for her being “too fat:

During its five-week run, Make Me a Supermodel provoked fury from health experts after Ms Hunter, a size 12, was repeatedly attacked, and reduced to tears, by judges who accused her of being too fat. But the last laugh belonged to the British public, who voted in their tens of thousands for her to be their female winner.

Jen hunter nails it when she says, “People need to realise that to be beautiful doesn’t mean you have to be the size of a 13-year-old boy.”

The problem is that for many years, a lot of designers have seen “13-year old boys” as their aesthetic ideals, and it permeates the media.

One final note, send the woman on the right a cheesecake.

*But that’s another rant.

What’s Up With Petraeus Disrespecting a Foreign Head of Government?*

Gen. David Petraeus, head of US Central Command, left, shakes hand with Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, prior to their talks at the Prime Minister’s residence in Islamabad, Pakistan, Monday.

General Stanley McChrystal, Commander of US Forces in Afghanistan, meets British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, in London, on October 1, 2009

OK, so I’m reading an article regarding differences between the Pakistani and US Military, and I see this picture, with that caption.

What’s wrong with this picture? The fact that General David Petraeus is meeting with a prime-minister of an allied country in his fatigues (I know, technically the Army Combat Uniform) at the Prime Minister’s residence, not some air field named Camp Middle-of-Nowhere.

While I understand that the chain of command for the US military goes through the White House, and not the Pakistani PM’s official residence, it seems to me that when one shows up at such a place, whether you civilian or military, you should wear something that involves….You know…A tie.

Notice when another 4 star General, meets another Prime Minister, one who has a lot less skin pigment, and speaks English with near native fluency, somehow or other the tie comes out

My guess is that this is not about racism, but rather about the way that Petraeus has sold himself, as America great warrior™, and he therefore wants to be seen by the press and the public as a warrior, and so he wears a “battle uniform”, but that’s psychoanalysis from a distance, and if you do that you become Charles Krauthammer, and I really do not want to head down that road.

*In a parliamentary system, the PM is head of government, and a president (or monarch) is head of state. In the United States, the President is both.

It’s Shagadelic, Baby!

The “Gogo” boots REALLY bring the ensemble together,

Though the Mini-Skirts, and the

White gloves and the Chinese model 79 sub-machine gun finish it all nicely.

Seriously, the Militiawomen uniforms at the People’s Republic 60th anniversary celebrations look like something out of Austin Powers’ wet dreams.

See also my earlier post Crouching Tiger, Hidden Segway, for more Chinese photo weirdness.

I understand the red, because after all, it is the color of Communism, but the miniskirts and Go-Go boots add a very silly aspect to all of this.

Rule Number One of Writing About Things Military

For Some Reason, I Imagine Her Singing Wagner Opera

Always include the picture of the blond Swedish hottie in uniform whenever you can.

In this case, it appears that the Swedish Conscription Council (Värnplikstrådet) is complaining that the brassieres offered to women conscripts are not up to the rigors of combat (also here):

The poor quality of the standard-issue sports bras prompted a group by female soldiers at the LV 6 military base in Halmstad to voice their displeasure to representatives from the Council recently.

The women complained that the bras’ fasteners have a tendency to come undone when the women performed rigorous exercise, forcing the female soldiers to take off all of their equipment in order to refasten the brassieres.

In addition, the bras aren’t flame resistant and, once lit, can melt onto conscripts’ skin, the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper reports.

I would think that this is something where little research would be necessary, since it must have been addressed in armies with high numbers of women serving (the number is only about 5% in Sweden).

Just email the Israelis, and you will have an answer in about an hour.

OK, This Offends My Fashion Sense

Vanity Fair, who gets such thing right, took a look at the outfits worn by Cindy McCain and Laura Bush at the convention, and generated price tag:

Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

I know that then I comment on women’s fashion, I am way out of my comfort zone, but honestly, I find nothing wrong with ODL’s beige dress, but what Cindy McCain is wearing is fugly, and you can be fugly for a lot less than 300 grand.

If someone could help me out though….There is clearly a MasterCard “Priceless” ad in this somewhere.

A Tempest in a D-Cup*

In response to concerns that underwires and other bra components might cause injury if an officer were shot while wearing a bra, underwires, and other metal plactic portions of the bra could cause physical injury, the German police have issued them to their female police officers.

They are all emblazoned with the word “police” and made from cotton, polyester, elastic and some other synthetic materials, thickly padded and with no metal or plastic studs or fasteners.

How long before they shoe up on eBay?

*No apology for the pun. It’s the entire reason I wrote the story.
