That’s the funny part. The sign of the Apocalypse is that the beltway pundits are starting to notice that most of McCain’s sentences are a noun, a verb, and POW.
We have Newsweek‘s Howard Fineman, Time‘s Anna Marie “Wonkette” Cox, and Politico‘s Ben Smith all saying, “Give it a rest”.
About bloody time.

But when he resorts to these kinds of falsehoods, and casts such aspersions on his opponent’s patriotism, John McCain is no longer putting his country first. If he were, he would recognize that the interests of the nation require a relatively truthful campaign. To fulfill his image of himself, McCain should stop lying about his opponent. For a man with his claims to honor and integrity, that’s not too much to ask.
This is a word that you never see in political writing. Ever.

I’m not sure what surprises me more, that someone in the press said this, that it came from the Startlegram (Fort Worth Star-Telegram my paper when I lived in Arlington, TX), or that the people who wrote this are senior members of the conservative CATO institute, which is heavily funded by the usual suspects, including Richard Mellon Scaife, but Ted Galen Carpenter and Malou Innocent get it completely when they say that , “Indeed, the record indicates that McCain’s own judgment is alarmingly bad.
They describe him as a, “Clear and present danger in the Oval Office.”
I’m wondering if conservatives are starting to tiptoe for the exits regarding the sick old man.
She will start after the convention, and follow Olbermann, replacing Dan Abrams.
Good news. Saw it on Olbermann last night, and he said something interesting that I would like confirmed, that the costs of a live audience was what did in Donohue…The audience shows up for free, but I guess that they increase the cost of production.

It’s a rather nice profile of Dr. Roubini, though I agree with Paul Krugman that his prediction of a housing crash was hardly unique, and that they missed what was special about his predictions, that there would be as Krugman says, “there would be large “knock-on” effects from the bursting bubble on the financial system”, i.e. the credit crunch as we are currently experiencing it.
Interestingly enough, it looks like the crisis will exceed Roubini’s most pessimistic projections, which is kind of scary.
One wonders if this “slip” in an interview is a Freudian slip, or intentional:

As writer Greg Mitchell notes, even Nedra Pickler is saying that the emperor has no clothes.
For saying that Barack Obama is somehow elitist for going to Hawaii, where his grandmother lives.
I spent 10 of my first 18 years on the west coast. Hawaii is not an exotic vacation location….It’s firmly middlebrow…Unless, of course, you think that going outside the DC beltway is a long trip.

Let’s see…John Sidney McCain III cheated on his first wife, with his second wife, and somehow this is a problem for Obama?

It appears that some of the people that he interviewed on the record about forgeries concocted by Bush and His Evil Minions™ regarding Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda are getting a lot of pressure to recant, so Ron Suskind will release the raw transcripts of the interviews.

In this case, Paul La Monica, who always seems to find a silver lining, no matter how bogus, is now saying that he expects losses in the financial industry to exceed $1 trillion. He even quotes noted bear Nouriel Roubini.
It would appear that the financial journalists are starting to notice reality chewing on their tuchas.
Finally. The Obama has used the word “lie” to describe McCain’s latest ad.
People in Washington hate the term, but who cares, the electorate appreciates “straight talk.”

This ad is a lie, and it’s part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam. It appears that McCain’s press availabilities are becoming severely limited.
Truth be told, part of this may be the Rove protégés, who like to be tough to the point of vindictiveness to the press, but I’ve seen seeming awfully confused lately, and I’m beginning to wonder if he’s not on the far slope of some sort of dementia.
He’s not even doing regular press conferences now.
In either case, the press has had its feelings hurt.
Well, the jobless numbers came out, and they suck. The weekly numbers rose by 7,000 to 455,000, a 6 year high, when predictions were for a drop to 433K, and the 4 week moving average, which is less noisy, rose to 419,500, a 5 year high.
At least our misery has company, with the ECB holding rates steady, saying that “risks to economic growth were starting to materialize”, which is a signal that Euro zone rates will remain steady.
Of course, our relentlessly optimistic financial press has to try to make s%$# into Shinola in housing, where they are touting a 5.3% month to month gain, which as Barry Ritholtz so eloquently notes, this is unmitigated crap, and driven by seasonal differences more than anything else, and the numbers are down year over year.
Additionally, we do not know how many of these are short sales in lieu of foreclosure.
We also have retail experiencing major suckitude now that the rebate checks have run out. To the degree that people are spending any more, it’s on necessities, and they are running up their credit cards to do this, because the banks are cutting back on HELOCs.
Meanwhile, oil rose on supply concerns after Kurdish rebels blew up a Turkish pipeline, though gasoline is down for the 21st straight day.
In the world of insurance, the largest US insurer, American International Group wrote down more than $11 billion in holdings, and is making noises about selling more shares to raise capital.
Obama spent $5 million, so McCain is spending $6 million.
To quote Shreck, “Do you think maybe he’s compensating for something?”
And it’s mostly the usual suspicts, which is to say at least half of them should not be doing this.

Andrea Mitchell, Roger Simon and Mike Barnicle are all sitting around saying that John Sidney McCain III is an honorable man, and that the only way that he would sign off on the current attack ads is if he were completely out of the loop.
Because he’s just so honorable…..and, it appears, so bloody senile.

The economic reporters out there are finally noticing that the mortgage crisis is not just subprime, and that default and foreclosure rates for Alt-A and Prime mortgages are skyrocketing too.
John Sidney McCain’s strength has always been that the press loves him.
The press loves him because he gives them access, and he spends a lot of time sucking up to him.
Well, it now appears that the McCain campaign is restricting access to the press.
I’m not sure if they are simply unprepared, or if McCain can no longer handle the give and take, he increasingly seems confused on the campaign trail, but in either case, if the press does not grade McCain on a friendly curve, he will fail.
