Damn!

Michelle Bachmann has dropped out of the Presidential race.

If Rick “Miss Malaprop” Perry drops out, as seems likely, I may have to start writing, because it’s getting to the point where the snark does not write itself.

Why I Haven’t Written About L’Affaire Cain

Because it is the Republican presidential primary, and it’s so whacky that all I can do is make fun of them.

Unfortunately, the reality that is Herman Cain simply beyond my meager literary gifts to ridicule.  I can’t beat the straight news.

A quick search of The Onion reveals that they haven’t covered it either, to their (far better) writers appear to be flummoxed by this as well.

Will Rogers I ain’t.

All Praise Be to God for That Which he Has Granted…

In this case, it’s the fact that Sarah Palin has declared that she will not run for President in 2012, which means that I can add her to my list of They Who Must Not Be Named:

Sarah Palin said she won’t seek the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, ending a lengthy and attention-grabbing political flirtation that kept voters and potential rivals guessing while buttressing her public profile.

The former Alaska governor and her party’s 2008 vice presidential nominee — more recently a reality TV star and cable-news commentator — said she opted against a White House run because she believed “that at this time I can be more effective in a decisive role to help elect other true public servants to office — from the nation’s governors, to congressional seats and the presidency.”

Her announcement, in a statement sent to supporters today, removed a major uncertainty surrounding the Republican presidential race while raising questions about how she might use her celebrity and political following to shape the primary.

“I will continue driving the discussion for freedom and free markets, including in the race for president,” Palin’s statement said.

“I will help coordinate strategies to assist in replacing” President Barack Obama, keeping Republican control of the U.S. House and helping her party win a Senate majority, she said.

This means that I never have to write about her, or read about her, again.

While we are at it, let me add the following people to my list:

  • John and Kate Gosslin.
  • The cast of The Jersey Shore.
  • The “Real Housewives” of anywhere.
  • Nancy Grace.  (If she flips out on national TV, or is tried for a crime, this is suspended for reasons of schadenfreude)

Actually, let’s say that it includes pretty much any reality TV star.

In any case, Sarah is now done.  She’s made her bucks off of her 15 minutes of fame, and she was a springboard for Michelle Bachmann to become a viable (?) presidential candidate.  (The Republican Crazy Bitch Babe is the genre that she created.)

Where I’ve Been the Past Couple of Days

My room was on the 1st floor on the front right

The enclosed porch on the back right is new.

For the past two days, I’ve been camping at the Atlantia 30th year celebration, and the site, pretty much across VA route 20 from James Madison’s home in Montpelier, did not have any internet access (voice and text worked fine), so I wasn’t posting anything.

I was also 20 miles from Charlottesville, VA, where I spent the plurality of my youth growing up (6 years), so I checked out the old house on Brandywine Drive.

It appears that my Dad’s planting of ivy on the lower front yard took.

One of his other lawn innovations, a cairn which ran the length of the lawn, has mercifully been removed.

I recall many an unpleasant afternoon removing grass that grew in between the stones.

I hated that pile or rocks about as much as I did the plant to whose roots the flowering plum in Portland (big, long shoe sole puncturing thorns, but that’s another story), so the fact that is gone fills me with some glee.

I also swung by my old elementary school, Greenbriar.

It’s the first time that I’ve seen the old house in more than 35 years, though I was at the elementary school about 20 years ago.

As a measure of how little life I have, this is the first time that I have missed two consecutive days to post since I started blogging in 2007.  (I think that the total number of missed days is less than 10)

Well Our Power is Back On…

So after navigating innumerable road closings New Jersey, including parts of the Garden State Parkway, without benefit of a single sign showing where the f%$# we are supposed to go, we make it home, and our power is out.

While I could post with my laptop battery and cell phone, it’s after midnight, we’re exhausted, and there was no power, and BGE was saying that it would be turned back on on on Friday.

Well, electricity just came back on, and I’m exhausted, so I’m getting some damn sleep.

    Light Posting for a While

Battening down the hatches, and we are actually at my Mother-In-Law’s, so we are both battening down her hatches for Hurricane Irene, and helping her pack, since she is moving from Monsey, NY to the Baltimore area.

    Busy, busy, busy.

My prediction is that it will be a whole bunch of nothing, but I’m frequently wrong.

    Thorstein Veblen is Back

Not the historical figure, but rather the nom de blog of the principal of Economic Policy Advice for Barack Obama, formerly called Economists for Firing Larry Summers, has returned to posting after taking a few months off because life (Grad School, my guess) got in the way.

I still use the old name in my blogroll, because I think that it is a better name.

His posts are uniformly good, but rather too infrequent for the medium of a blog.

    I Made a 911 Funny Today

Things are in flux at work. The US Army has cancelled itsMulti-Function Utility/Logistics and Equipment Vehicle (MULE), and the MULE is supposed to be the lead platform for the Autonomous Navigation System (ANS) that I am working on.

So, the future path for our program is not clear, and rumors are running rampant.

With the end of the fiscal year coming up, we got an update on the current state of the rumor mill from our boss at our department’s weekly meeting, which is a rather humane, and intelligent way of handling things.

He noted that there was still plenty to do in either case, so we shouldn’t slack off:

Boss: We need statuses on progress, so we don’t go into airplane mode.

    Me: Airplane mode?

Boss: (Makes throwing motion) Throwing paper airplanes as you get to the end. (instead of working)

Me: Oh, I thought that you meant 911.

You know, I think that this is the first actually funny joke about 911* that I’ve heard, and I was the one who made it.

And BTW, as the meeting was breaking up, the boss’s de facto number 2 threw a paper airplane.

It’s a nice group of people there.

Needless to say, posting is likely to be light for a while, I have work to wrap up, and a resume to update.

*Yes, I know all the jokes about “Hijackers surprised to find themselves in hell” stuff, but that is not a 911 joke, it’s a hijacker joke.

    No,

But I’d click through if it said “Ann Coulter in jail”:

Yes, this is yet another add served up by Google Adsense and no, I am not including a link.

Well better a fraction of a cent to my pocket than in theirs.

Still, I’d love to find someone who does a better job of serving ads that you know, actually aren’t completely ludicrous when juxtaposed with my reader(s).

My standard Google™ Adsense™ disclaimers below:

Please note: once again, that I do not vet, nor do I endorse any ad that appears on my site, and I reserve the right to mock both the ads that appear on my site, as well as the advertisers.

Also, please note, this should be in no way construed as an inducement or a request for my reader(s) to click on any ad that they would not otherwise be inclined to investigate further. This would be a violation of the terms of service for Google Adsense.
