Sunse? Space Goatse*?

There is a reason why the comments at io9 are so rude.

Space Goatse

The Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) has published what is the most detailed photo of a The clearest photo of a sunspot we’ve seen thus far.

But this is not what I, or many of the folks who commented about the picture.

It was about 50-50 between people who thought that it looked like the eye of Sauron, and people who thought that it resembled a certain unspeakable Internet meme.

Me, I never saw the Lord of the Rings movies, so you can guess where my mind went.

In any case, if you want to review the comments on the thread, and you understand the context,* then you may find significant amusement regarding what is otherwise a straightforward science story.

H/t hedgehog on by invitation only Stellar Parthenon BBS for finding this little “gem”.

*If you don’t know what Goatse is, for the sake of all that is holy, do not Google it!
Thank SupaChupacabra at io9 for this bit of wit.

Gr8 Practical Joke

A few years back, some people in and around San Diego commissioned a sculpture of a surfer called the “Magic Carpet Ride”.

It’s been rather controversial amongst the surfers, who felt that the statue, “short of the macho image they thought their sport should project.”

As a result of this, it has been a target of of some pranks since it was unveiled in 2007.

This is, of course not particularly surprising, when you juxtapose a statue and a sub-culture that prides itself on being unconventional:

Ever since, the statue, known locally — and derisively — by local surfers as the “Cardiff Kook,” has routinely been dressed in different costumes by snarky locals. At various times, the statue of a young male surfer has been adorned with a ballerina’s tutu and luche libre wrestler’s mask, a woman’s bikini and other costumes, most recently a tennis outfit with racket.

That being said, about a month ago, some prankster has entered realm of the masters of the art.

He, and his minions, got jiggy late one night with some serious paper mâché. They encased the statue in the maw of a large Great White Shark,* creating the illusion of his being swallowed up by a gargantuan selachian.

This is up there in the “one for the ages” category, up there with Davidson HS senior Kyle Garchar, who got the fans from Darby high school to spell out “we suck” at the Darby-Davidson football game.

Brilliant, just brilliant.

*Actually, it might be big enough for C. Megalodon. That’s one big mofo.

You know, the one who quote by the emergency slide.

But that is far less classy, and less amusing than what one “Jenny” did.

She spent 2½ years as an assistant to one “Spencer” who apparently has a temper and bad breath, discovered that he let slip that he was keeping her around because she was a HOPA (Hot Piece Of Ass), and never intended to allow her to advance, so she turned in her resignation……

……Which she emailed to everyone at the firm……

His hair looks better in person

My wife and I had finished dropping the kids off at school following Natalie’s Bat Mitzvah rehearsal, the ceremony is this Saturday, and we stopped at Java Mamas.*

As we pulled up, there were people getting out of a couple of black SUVs, and I looked over, and said something like, “Would you look at that!”

It was former Maryland governor, and current candidate for governor, Bob Ehrlich.

My wife replied, “Matthew, behave!

I behaved, but I snapped the shot. He’s the one in the shades.

They weren’t politicking, they were just getting coffee, and I didn’t say anything.

It’s not a great pic, though I think that it’s about as good a photo as I am likely to take with my cell phone.

He’s a little bit grayer than I recall from his last official photo, but that was almost 4 years ago.

I did not stay around, my wife and I had errands, so I cannot speak to tipping, though they did queue up politely and wait their turns.

I don’t approve of his politics, but I do approve of his taste in coffee.

Brains!!!!!

Brains!

Brains…………

You know………

Hot Marshmallow, Hershey® Bar, and Graham Crackers would do nicely too…

Giant animated food, sounds like another horror movie…

But the kids are happy.

Natalie had a music competition in Hershey, PA which included entrance to the Hershey Park, so the rest of us got some (discounted) tickets to the amusement park, and we made a day of it.

It was a lot of fun, even if the Boardwalk, where most of the water rides are, was not yet open.

We had a lot of fun.

I made an interesting observation: The appearance of a child eating fresh, hot, S’mores is almost indistinguishable from that of a Zombie eating human brains.
