So, Who is Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC) F%$#ing?

Because it appears that he lives at the C Street complex too.

Considering the fact that it increasingly appears that the primary purpose of this residence is to allow philandering Congressman to collude to conceal the fact, it’s become a much less popular place to lose.

At the very least he’s refusing to explicitly deny that this is where he lives, and if he weren’t living there, he’d be categorically denying.

You know it was much easier answering the question, “W is Heath Shuler f%$#ing?,” when he was an overpriced underperforming rookie for the Washington Redskins.

When that was going on, we knew who was being f%#$ed: the fans, who at the end of the day were the ones who supplied the money to pay his salary.

Yeah, I’m still a bit bitter about it.

Imprison Ben Bernanke for Treason

I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here!

Seriously, Ben Bernanke is saying that there is no need for a Consumer Financial Product Agency, because the Federal Reserve can handle this job.

He is referring to the same Federal Reserve that was run by Alan Greenspan for over 20 years and was an enthusiastic cheerleader of the toxic financial products.

The same secretive and opaque agency that revels in its lack of response to the public’s perceived needs.

The same one that was run by a man, who said, “Wasn’t a need for a law against fraud because if a floor broker was committing fraud, the customer would figure it out and stop doing business with him,” for over 20 years.

That Federal Reserve? The one whose New York bank, which is charged with regulating Wall Street, leaves seats on its banks allocated to consumer advocates empty?

You are suggesting that an organization that aided the elevation Alan “Bubbles” Greenspan, a man who basically got his PhD from the back of a cereal box, to a position the preeminent economic guru of the United States of America be allowed to be in charge of protecting consumers?

I’s just time to cue Captain Renault. (Top Pic)

What’s more the, as Elizabeth Warren, the woman who chairs the oversight committee being stonewalled by the US Department of the Treasury on TARP oversight notes, the arguments against a dedicated consumer protection agency are 3 parts outright lies, and 4 parts intentional stupidity.

Put the Federal Reserve in charge of consumer protection? Goldman F$#@ing Sachs would do a more honest and competent job of that.

Dayam! I Get Some Whack Email!

And it wasn’t even addressed to me about this blog, it was on a little Yahoo Group that I run to facilitate the Owings Mills Jewish community.*

I have new members set to “moderated” so as to prevent the phenomena where some joins, posts spam, and leaves, and someone posted this over the top screed that appears to call for the murder of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama!

I looked at it, and was about to delete it, and then I looked again and thought that the phrase, “The death time of lucifer and united states and clinton is come. GOD said: ” Kill clinton , Destroy united states !” was enough.

I contacted the Secret Service, read them the letter over the phone, and they had me send a copy to them.

Jeebus, the hate out there is scary.

*Note that the poster is not Jewish. When the opening ‘graph reads, “I am called by Hashem of Israel – my Father GOD, the Most High, and the Son of GOD, the Messiah of Israel – my LORD Yeshua to convey GOD’s Words to people in the last days. I have proof, the visible Sign of HOLY SPIRIT like a Light Dove on my forehead, and the Sign of Light Cross on my face,” it’s clearly one of the Evangelical proselytization group, like J4J or MJ, behind this.

Eric Holder Agonistes

So, Newsweek magazine has an article relating the internal struggle of Attorney General Eric Holder with regard to things like torture and illegal wiretapping. He is horrified at what has been done, but he understands Barack Obama’s desire to cover all this stuff up so that he violate the constitution and the supervision of congress too move forward and not look back (2nd and last graph of the article):

These are not just the philosophical musings of a new attorney general. Holder, 58, may be on the verge of asserting his independence in a profound way. Four knowledgeable sources tell NEWSWEEK that he is now leaning toward appointing a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration’s brutal interrogation practices, something the president has been reluctant to do. While no final decision has been made, an announcement could come in a matter of weeks, say these sources, who decline to be identified discussing a sensitive law-enforcement matter. Such a decision would roil the country, would likely plunge Washington into a new round of partisan warfare, and could even imperil Obama’s domestic priorities, including health care and energy reform. Holder knows all this, and he has been wrestling with the question for months. “I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president’s agenda,” he says. “But that can’t be a part of my decision.”

…..

But in late June Holder asked an aide for a copy of the CIA inspector general’s thick classified report on interrogation abuses. He cleared his schedule and, over two days, holed up alone in his Justice Department office, immersed himself in what Dick Cheney once referred to as “the dark side.” He read the report twice, the first time as a lawyer, looking for evidence and instances of transgressions that might call for prosecution. The second time, he started to absorb what he was reading at a more emotional level. He was “shocked and saddened,” he told a friend, by what government servants were alleged to have done in America’s name. When he was done he stood at his window for a long time, staring at Constitution Avenue.

Why are we seeing a report like this? What is driving the reports of how Eric Holder is agonizing over his dual obligations to enforce the law and to do the bidding of Barack Obama?

This is an attempt by Eric Holder to retain some dignity when he makes the wrong choice. He will not be appointing a special prosecutor, nor will he be authorizing any future investigations from within the Department of Justice on these matters, because it is politically inconvenient for Barack Obama and His Stupid* Minions, and he wants to ensure that his reputation takes as small a hit as possible.

He is going to do the craven and political thing, and not the right thing, but he wants all of us to know, particularly those inside the Washington Beltway, that he really agonized over it.

*It’s stupid, because they do not realize that not prosecuting Republican law breakers will not create any bipartisanship, but rather, it will create a sense of impunity that will fuel ‘Phant attacks against the President. We only have to look at Bill Clinton’s experience, where his decision not to pursue Iran-Contra led to a heretofore unknown level of vitriol from the Republicans.

Obama is Dog Whistle Gay Bashing

Normally, I’m not a big fan of protest theatrics, to my mind, Code Pink frequently does more harm than good to the cause, but I have to approve of ACT-UP’s chaining themselves to the Capitol Rotunda today.

What’s going on here is that during the campaign, Barack Obama promised to lift the ban on funding needle exchange programs, which:

  • Do not encourage drug use.
  • Reduce AIDS transmission.
  • Reduce the cost to society.
  • Provide an entry point with addicts for counseling.

The problem is that the White House submitted a budget to Congress still contained the ban on federal funding for needle exchange programs.

So this wasn’t even a matter of his not fighting for the program, it’s a matter of him submitting language reauthorizing a program that he explicitly campaigned against in his budget.

A president’s budget is purely advisory. Congress can, and does, amend it, or ignore it, as they see fit, but he is unwilling to even leave out a bit of language authorizing a program he claims to oppose.

I’m with John Aravosis’s take on this

  1. The candidate promised to lift the ban.
  2. The White House Web site reaffirmed the president’s commitment to lifting the ban.
  3. The White House Web site no longer reaffirms his commitment to lifting the ban.
  4. The president now refuses to lift the ban.
  5. The president actually affirmatively makes things worse by administratively supporting [and] defending the ban.
  6. The spokesman reiterates the president’s support for lifting the ban, some day, once Congress gets around to it.

There is a pattern to all this, whether it’s his sucking up to homophobic screeds “reformed homosexual” Donnie McClurkin, using legal arguments equating gay marriage with pedophilia and incest, refusing to take administrative actions to even modestly impede the anti-gay witch hunt in the military, and now affirmatively submitting anti-gay legislation to Congress.

Either there is some real homophobia here, or there has been a political calculus made that appealing to homophobia is a political win, because the opposition wants gay people dead.

At best, it’s no different than the prosecutors in and around Baltimore who will routinely demand more severe sentences in plea bargains for black defendants, because they know that they have a better chance to convict a black man, even in front of a black jury.

I believe that this action has been taken because it can be seen as a gay issue, not in spite of it.

This is dog-whistle gay bashing, and it is quite deliberate.

Light Night Comics Must Love Republicans

Because this stuff writes itself.

Case in point, the rebounding scandal of John Ensign’s affair and his payoff of his mistress and her husband, where we now discover that , “His lawyer has just released a remarkable statement saying that Ensign’s parents paid the Hamptons $96,000 after the 51-year-old senator told his Mom and Dad about the affair.”

Republican family values….Things go bad, and rich daddy bails you out.

Well, At Least I’m Not in the New York Senate

With nothing going on, and a 31-31 tie continuing, Governor David Paterson has named former MTA chief Richard Ravitch as Lieutenant Governor, who could theoretically cast the tie breaker vote.

The thing is, it appears that he has no authorities to do so, at least not according to the Republicans, Democratic turncoat and poster child for corruption Pedro Espada Jr., and Democratic State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Liberal Advocacy Groups Tell Barack Obam to Go Cheney Himself

A number of groups, most notably Moveon®, have been targeting pro-insurance industry members of Congress, most notably Mary Landrieu, for her opposition to the public option in the health care plan.

Well, Barack Obama, who I think is more motivated to have a health plan pass Congress than he is about getting a good health plan though Congress, because the risks for the latter is higher, has now told these groups to sit down and shut up:

President Obama, strategizing yesterday with congressional leaders about health-care reform, complained that liberal advocacy groups ought to drop their attacks on Democratic lawmakers and devote their energy to promoting passage of comprehensive legislation.

Well, it appears that at least some of the groups out here have realized that Barack Obama can be wrong just like the rest of us mere mortals:

A spokesperson for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, one of the groups Obama reportedly complained about, confirms to me that the group is upping its buy with a new round of ads attacking moderate Dem Senators like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu this coming week. “If congressional staffers are complaining to the White House, that shows they are nervous and what we’re doing is working,” PCCC’s Stephanie Taylor says. “So we should just keep doing what we’re doing.”

Meanwhile, a second group, Change Congress, has not dropped plans for a coming campaign of ads attacking the Senators for taking contributions from health care special interests, Change Congress spokesperson Adam Green confirms. He urged the White House to consider a “good cop, bad cop approach,” suggesting Obama could hold positive rallies in the home states of moderate Dem Senators while Change Congress goes ahead with its ads.

This is a refreshing return to sanity.

Barack Obama has been running against the left to prove his “non-partisan” props for a while now, and it’s time to realize that he is at best an incrementalist, and by the standards of industrialized nations, a right of center incrementalist at that.

Another Thought on Sarah Palin

My thoughts on Sarah Palin surprise resignation remains that she quit to run for President.

Simply put, I have been receiving reports of her hubris and self-important behavior from my dad since before the election, and I think that she really believes that God wants her to be President, and with what shee sees as the increasingly vitriolic campaign of the Republican establishment against her, she feels the need to “talk directly to the people,” specifically the people of Iowa and New Hampshire.

I think that she honestly believes that if she can meet enough voters 1 on 1, then she can win the caucus and primary.

I should note that my position is not the consensus in the blogosphere, which is that there is either a major scandal or health issue about to rear its head.

Palin’s bizarre performance at her announcement would indicate something sudden, but both the recent very public push-back from the DC ‘Phants and a potential scandal falls in that category.

In either case, I long for the day when she goes on my They Who Must Not Be Named list.

Eric Boehlert and Bill Kristol Are Both Wrong

Eric Boehlert agrees with William Kristol when he says that Todd Purdum’s piece must be wrong when he says that it’s simply not possible that multiple individuals would have concluded that she had Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

First, my background: I lived in Alaska from 1963 to 1969, I was 7 when I left, and my father worked at various levels in the state and local government, being the head of planning for Governor Bill Egan, and head of the State Charter Commission.

He maintains the friendships that he made there, and as such, he is in touch with many people who are very much a part of the political scene there, particularly on the Democratic Party side.

The other thing to realize is just how tiny the political scene is there. Everyone knows, and meets, everyone else on an almost daily basis when the legislature is in session, so if one person made a comment, like “I was looking through the DSM IV, and ‘Narcissistic Personality Disorder’ matched Palin to a ‘T,” it could rapidly become a talking point.

This makes this story likely, but the email that I got forwarded to me by my dad pretty much makes it a almost certainly true.

I would note that my dad quoted this individual to me in October saying essentially the same thing.

Further amusement –this time amongst the R’s. Lots of bad substantive stuff to say about Palin, but frankly I think the sexism is disgusting from both parties and elsewhere.

I was one of the people who told TP [Todd Purdum] Sarah had a narcissistic personality disorder! And he told me I wasn’t the first to say it.

Time for a Blogger Ethics Panel

It appears that the Washington Post is selling access to, for sums in excess of $25,000.00, access to the “powerful few” in DC:

For $25,000 to $250,000, The Washington Post has offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record, nonconfrontational access to “those powerful few”: Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and — at first — even the paper’s own reporters and editors.

The astonishing offer was detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he felt it was a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its “health care reporting and editorial staff.”

It appears that WaPo executive editor Marcus Brauchli has circulated a memo saying that members of the news department are prohibited from attending, which is unsurprising, since they got caught.

Normally, I wouldn’t expect journalists to turn down free food.
