McCain is Completely Fr#$@ed

Well, it appears that in an interview in der Spiegel, Nouri al Maliki, when asked about Obama’s 16 month time frame, replied, “US presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.”

As Marc Ambinder noted, “Via e-mail, a prominent Republican strategist who occasionally provides advice to the McCain campaign said, simply, ‘We’re f#@$ed.'”

Seriously, John McCain is more than “Iraq Forever”, it’s “Iraq Forever, with permanent military Super-Bases”, and while Maliki’s government has backed off a bit on the statement, there is no way they want those US bases there, and what’s more domestic politics makes it politically untenable for them to want those bases there.

Obama Pushing McCain On Afghanistan

Well, Barack Obama just gave a speech on Iraq and Afghanistan. His basic thesis is that the real war we need to fight is in Afghanistan, and that the war in Iraq is a distraction.

Interestingly, we are now seeing McCain flip-flopping on Afghanistan. He has previously been adamant that it was an obligation of our NATO allies, and of Pakistan, and the US resources would go elsewhere, but now is calling for, “at least three additional brigades” to Afghanistan.

The only way to do that is to pull out of Iraq, because we have no troops available. That is what the chairman of the JCS said not so long ago.

Let’s hope that Obama’s staff picks up on this, and hammers him with it.

And Speaking of Idiots…

Cynthia McKinney got the Green Party nomination.

I have had discussions with her constituents, and it’s clear that she is a smaller version of George W. Bush.

She is where she is because of who her daddy was, and her tenure as a member of congress was disastrous. When things needed to be done in the district, regardless of which side the political divide you were on, meeting were scheduled to make sure she could not attend, because she would screw up any consensus and generally throw fits.

I don’t think that this is the year to vote for a 3rd party candidate, but I consider that to be a matter of the reader’s personal conscience, particularly in safe states like Texas or Massachusetts.

However I strongly suggest that voting for this third party candidate is a betrayal of your obligation to cast your vote in a meaningful way.

She was right about distrusting Bush, but a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Check out her record. Talk with her former constituents, and then vote for someone else.

John McCain Adulterer AND a Bigamist?

One of the less inspiring parts of John McCain’s life story was when, after coming back from Vietnam, he dumped his first wife Carole to marry rich beer heiress Cindy.

Now it appears that he has been lying about some of the specifics:

  • McCain wrote that he had separated from Carol before he began dating Cindy, but his divorce gives the date of separation as Jan 7, 1980, 9 months after staring to date his 2nd wife to be.
  • His divorce was granted April 2, 1980, but he got Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.

Hmmmmm…….I’m sure that the press will find some way of making it “inspiring”.

Bush and His Evil Minions™ Pressuring Germany’s Merkel Over Location of Obama Speech

Well, it appears that Barack Obama will be in Europe, and he wants to give a speech at the Brandenberg gate in Berlin, but members of the Bush delegation at the G-8 summit twisted arms to prevent this.

It appears that Merkel is interested in taking over Blair’s role as Bush’s poodle, though members of her CDU party are generally supportive of Obama speaking there because they want to hear what he wants to say.

Merkel has also gotten herself in an eye poking contest with the Mayor of Berlin, and member of the opposition (sort of, German party coalitions are complex) SDU Klaus Wowereit, who has made a point of calling Merkel out on her own overseas electioneering.

What Driftglass Said

In a Democracy, the cure for a dimwit, sociopath king is not a hip, smart king who pledges to snake our overflowing toilets after he assumes the throne.

In a Democracy, we cannot allow there to be a throne in the first place.

Obama deserves condemnation for his FISA capitulation for this reason.

Go read the whole article, along with his masterful use of photoshop.

Crap. John McCain is Telling the Truth

OK, now we have Obama “Puzzled” by blip flop charges, because he has completely reversed himself on FISA, and now he’s saying that in order for “mental distress” to be used to justify a late term abortion, it must be a formal psychiatric disorder out of the DSM IV.*

So, he’s selling the constitution out privacy, he’s reversed himself on free trade agreements, and now he is suggesting a heightened standard for late term abortion (while using the right wing’s language of “Partial Birth Abortion”).

John McCain can call him a flip flopper on the issues because Barack Obama is a flip flopper on the issues.

His only saving grace is the John Sidney McCain is a bigger flip flopper.

I guess that we’ll get the president we deserve.
