Pass the Popcorn

Lisa Murkowski’s people, though not Senator Murkowski herself, are making noises about her trying to run for reelection on the Libertarian ticket:

Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has received significant support since narrowly losing to Joe Miller in the August GOP primary, a spokesman said Sunday.

Murkowski has yet to endorse her Republican rival, leading to widespread speculation that she is evaluating options for a possible re-entry into the race. She has two options if she wants to re-enter: to be invited to run under the banner of the Alaska Libertarian Party or to mount a write-in campaign.

“She has received a huge outpouring of support from Alaskans, both individuals and groups,” Murkowski spokesman Steve Wackowski wrote Sunday in an e-mail to the Daily News-Miner. He cited support from Alaska Native groups and the fishing and energy industries.

I don’t think that she is going to run, and if she does, it is not clear who she would draw more votes from, though my money is on pulling more from Miller than from Democrat Scott McAdams.

Additionally, the Libertarian Party has already been cool to the idea of putting her on the ticket.

I don’t think that she will run, but that this will freeze Miller’s campaign in place, and not do so for McAdams, because Miller’s campaign is very different with Murkowski in the race, and Mcadams’ isn’t.

The Teabaggers Oregon Chapter is Doomed

The Stupidity, shortly followed by

The Groveling Apology

The Oregon division of the teabaggers, AKA the “Oregon Tea Party,” decided to steal the slogan of Anonymous on 4chan.

Anonymous is/are a group of people who took on the Church of Scientology, and pretty much won.

Anonyous took action: There was a flood of pr0n links and the like on the Oregon Teabaggers’ Facebook page, which has now been taken down, though not before the Teabaggers posted a sycophantic apology (see pic).

Heh.

Stuff like this is why 4chan is firmly on my list of People I Do Not Want to Piss Off.

Karma, Neh?

So, a preacher in Ohio with a lot of money and wacked priorities decides to erect a six plus story statue of Jesus, because helping the poor is for punks.

I imagine that he thought that God is much bigger into graven images than he is into helping the downtrodden.

Well, the score is now God:1, religious and self-aggrandizing nut-job:0.

Lightning struck the statue and it burned to the ground. Doubtless the preacher won’t even feel a shred of doubt though.

Posted via mobile, which is why I am not composing a filk of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” (“Smoke on the Jesus?”) for my blog.

You Know, When a Republican Plagiarizes Barack Hussein Obama

He loses the primary, even when his opponent is a Puerto Rican by birth, which, in the Republican party makes him a despised minority:

State Rep. Raul Labrador handily defeated Vaughn Ward 48%-39% in Tuesday’s Idaho primary, and will go on to challenge Democratic Rep. Walt Minnick this November.

Ward, the establishment favorite, had a six-to-one money advantage over Labrador, and had a heavy television presence while Labrador ran only radio spots. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin also campaigned for Ward in the closing days of the race.

(emphasis mine)

And I really love the fact that another of Sister Sarah’s anointed got pasted.

………

Ward also faced plagiarism allegations on his campaign Web site and in his speeches. Politico reported that Ward’s kick-off campaign speech in January closely mirrored that of President Barack Obama’s 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention.

He was also dinged by the Pentagon for appearing in uniform in a campaign ad, and was forced to take down the ad.

Truth be told, I’m not sure if Palin would have endorsed Ward but for the fact that his opponent was Hispanic.

There have been enough reports of Sarah Palin’s disdain for minorities, particularly Alaskan Eskimos and Indians to make one wonder about how she feels about non-whites.

Still, heh.

Deep Thought

I never watched, nor was interested in watching, the television show Lost.

I don’t know what happened, but I have read that some fanboi (and fangrrl) have been profoundly disappointed.

I feel some schadenfreude at all the fans who were disappointed by the series finale.

I guess that makes me a bad person.

Why I Read Joe Steffen’s Blog

If you know nothing of Maryland Politics, you don’t know who Joe Steffen is.

He’s a Republican political operative, formerly Bob Ehrlich’s aide, who is currently on the outs with the party, who is also known by his nickname, the “Prince of Darkness.”

I think of him as Lee Atwater writ on a state wide basis.

That being said, he tends to be rather more chatty about the comings and goings of Republican party politics in the state (In fact, it was imprudent postings on a BBS that were traced back to him which got him fired by “Bad Hair Bob” some years back), and so, despite my profound disagreements with him on issues of policy, I read his blog and I hear a lot of good inside baseball.

Case in point, he outs Republican party stalwart David Nawrocki for sending campaign emails from his work account.

It seems like a minor thing, until you realize that Nawrocki works for the Social Security Administration, which makes his email a criminal violation of the Hatch act.

Oopsie.

This is why I blogroll people and subscribe to their RSS feeds. It’s not because I agree with them, but because they can teach me things.

Your Daily Dose of Schadenfreude

Your moment of Zen:
Rep Souder and his mistress discussing abstinence

Representative Mark Souder (R-IN) will resign after it was revealed that he had an affair with one of his staffers, one Tracy Jackson:

Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN), a champion of abstinence education and traditional family values, will resign effective Friday after an affair with a female staffer in his district office, he announced today.

He said in a statement that he “sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff.” …

(emphasis mine)

If this video does not appear on The Daily Show‘s moment of Zen, I will send a strongly worded letter of complaint Comedy entral about this.

Shadenfreude

It appears that Rush Limbaugh is having problems selling his New York City penthouse apartment, so he has cut his asking price by $1 million.

I guess his little tantrum about New York raising taxes by a few pennies on rich pigs is costing him some change.

I noted this real estate transaction about 2 months ago, (Yes, the pictures are at the link, and yes, they are hideous) when I commented on the fact that his taste in decorating was less than refined.

Much more satisfying than putting their photos on the urinals

Iceland, a tiny nation of only 317,593 souls has looked at its epic bank failures, and said, “Why yes, we do have to make a federal case out of this:

More than a year and a half after Iceland’s major banks failed, all but sinking the country’s economy, police have begun rounding up a number of top bankers while other former executives and owners face a two-billion-dollar lawsuit.

Since Iceland’s three largest banks — Kaupthing, Landsbanki and Glitnir — collapsed in late 2008, their former executives and owners have largely been living untroubled lives abroad.

But the publication last month of a parliamentary inquiry into the island nation’s profound financial and economic crisis signaled a turning of the tide, laying much of the blame for the downfall on the former bank heads who had taken “inappropriate loans from the banks” they worked for.

What a quaint and old fashioned idea. When people corruptly enrich themselves at your expense, investigate.

If you find that they broke the law, arrest them and try them.

I vote for going medieval on the bankers asses.

[on edit]

Perhaps the bankers should learn this old prayer, “A furore normannorum libera nos domine.”*

*From the fury of the Northmen deliver us, O Lord!

Good News, Everyone!

Good news everyone!

I invented a device that makes you read this in your head using my voice!

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has ruled that a lower court erred when it said that the Texas money laundering statute only applied to cash, which led it to dismiss the case against Tom Delay:

Co-defendants of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay suffered a significant setback Wednesday in their quest to avoid a trial on charges that the trio conspired to launder corporate money during the 2002 elections.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals unanimously ruled that the lower state 3rd Court of Appeals erred when it accepted the co-defendants’ arguments that the money laundering law did not apply to them because the funds involved were checks, not cash. The all-Republican court, in effect, said the lower court acted prematurely.

I always thought that the ruling that check cannot be used to money launder was a pretty good indication of just how f%$#ed up justice and the judiciary are in Texas, and it’s nice to see the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which is the state supreme court on criminal matter (the Texas Supreme Court is the supreme court on civil matter), to recognize this.

The interesting thing here is that after his performance in Dancing With the Stars, I think that a Texas jury might be much more willing to convict.

Pass the popcorn.

That Special Election in Florida?

Bob Wexler retired, and there was a special election in Florida’s 19th district to replace him last night.

The results? Democrat Ted Deutch trounced Republican Ed Lynch, 62%-36%.

This is very much in line with the district’s PVI D +19, but that’s the point: there was no movement from the existing trends.

So much for “voter backlash” against the HCR bill.

I think that the Republicans may have seen the outrage of their base at losing when they thought that they had won, and thought that it was some sort of mass anger at the bill.

You Know that the ‘Phants are Crapping Their Pants When……

That look in his eyes is terror

When Karl Rove is so concerned about teabagger paranoia over the census that he as recorded a PSA for the decennial survey.

You see, the numbers are coming back, and it turns out that all over the Republican heartland, people are refusing to fill out the forms, because people like Michelle Bachmann and Glen Beck are telling them that it’s all a ploy for Barack Obama’s concentration camps for white folks.

What this means is that, probably for the first time in a very long time, that the under counting of minorities and immigrants may be balanced out by non-compliance among the suburban and rural white populations, which could move a few Congressional districts to bluer states, and change the shapes, of a few more.

I know that the census is important, and I know that it should be filled out promptly and accurately, but still, my initial thought is, “Heh. Hoist by their own petard.”

Quote of the Day

ABC News, 0:55

Heh.

Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox.

David Frum

I’m not sure if this is true, but it certainly has a ring of “truthiness” to it.

It should be noted that feeling angry and powerless is good for talk media, and talk media, like forms of communication, so folks like Limbaugh and Beck are crying all the way to the bank.

Your Moment of Schadenfreude

Because I love it when Rachel takes someone down hard

J.D. Hayworth was defeated in 2006 largely because he was one of the most, if not the most, compromised candidates by his ties to Jack Abramhoff.

Well, now he’s on Maddow, and claiming that John McCain’s investigations of the Abramhoff affair in 2004 exonerated him.

What actually happened was that McCain did his best to cover up all the dirt in 2004, because he wanted to run for President in 2008, which meant getting the Republican nomination.

So, now that Hayworth has had his ass kept out of jail by McCain, Hayworth is running a scorched earth primary challenge against him.

Heh.

BTW, Dennis G. at Balloon Juice has the full story, and McCain’s cover-up is a remarkably sordid tale.

Heh.

I wonder when McCain starts leaking stuff from his files tot he press about this.

Heh. Heh.

Hiram Monserrate Loses Election Bid

As you may recall Mr. Monseratte was expelled from the New York Senate after assaulting his girl friend, and now he has lost the election bid to José Peralta in a special election in which he took gay baiting to very ugly places.

Monseratte was running as an independent, because there was no way that the Democratic party would put him on the ticket after he was one of the two State Senators who switched to the Republicans, flipping the chamber briefly, and I’m wondering if it was over gay marriage now.

Hopefully, this is the end of his political career.

‘Phant Phamily Values

The Majority (Republican) leader of the Utah House of Delegates has been forced to reveal that when he was 28, he went nude hot-tubbing with a 15 year old that worked for him in the warehouse that he managed.

What’s more, he paid $150,000 in hush money to her when he tried to run for Congress:

In the midst of his 2002 congressional campaign, Utah House Majority Leader Kevin Garn paid $150,000 to a woman threatening to go public with a past relationship.

………

Maher’s story is this: In 1985, then 15 years old, Maher worked for then 30-year-old Garn at his business, Pegasus Records and KSG Enterprises.

She said Garn, who was married, struck up a relationship with her and one night took her to a location in Salt Lake City where they hot-tubbed together nude.

It would be sleazy even if she weren’t 15. She was his employee, and this is sexual harassment.

And if that weren’t squicky enough, he is her, “onetime Sunday school teacher.”

One note: as far as I can tell, Kevin Garn is not related to former Utah Senator Jake Garn.
