Texas Appeals Court Rules Revokes Texas Custody In Raid on Polygamy Compound

I already noted that the original complaint call leading to the raid was a hoax, and now the appeals court has ruled unanimously that, “the the state did not establish proper grounds to remove the children from their families.”

The ruling — an unusual mandamus opinion granting relief in a case not yet decided — came on the application of 38 women who challenged state custody and another 54 who filed a second action. But lawyers said the burden was on the state to show why it should not apply to the rest of the children as well.

It sounds to me like someone was cowboying way too much on this.

Someone screwed up, big time.

My Apologies, There is a Schadenfreude Shortage, and I Haven’t Mentioned This

I really should be writing about the travails of New York Republican congressman Vito Fossella, following his arrest for drunk driving while on the way to his mistress, with whom he had fathered a child.

The sane* Republicans in New York, are calling for his resignation, but congressman Peter King, showing that he’s firmly in the nutzo category, is blasting them for, “Putting a knife in the back of a good guy who’s made a mistake.”

Actually, it’s at least two mistakes…heh.

It gets better, because it appears that not only is Vito not resigning, it looks like he has decided to stay in the race for reelection.

*Well, relatively sane…they are Republithugs.

Think Again: The Costs of Enforced Sexual Ignorance

Eric Alterman has a column up, Think Again: The Costs of Enforced Sexual Ignorance, in which he rightly excoriates the people who propose abstinence only education.

However, he misses the bigger point:

These programs are chosen as if specifically designed not to work. One long-term evaluation of 10 state abstinence-only programs concluded, “Abstinence-only programs show little evidence of sustained (long-term) impact on attitudes and intentions. Worse, they show some negative impacts on youth’s willingness to use contraception, including condoms, to prevent negative sexual health outcomes related to sexual intercourse. Importantly, only in one state did any program demonstrate short-term success in delaying the initiation of sex; none of these programs demonstrates evidence of long-term success in delaying sexual initiation among youth exposed to the programs or any evidence of success in reducing other sexual risk-taking behaviors among participants.”

(emphasis mine)

He seems to think that these programs are wrong headed, and failures as a result.

They are not. They are failures by design.

The driving force for the people behind these programs is that they believe that sex is evil.

The scripture , “It is better to marry than to burn”, states that marriage is preferable to lechery, but inferior to celibacy, and people behind this are not interested in protecting children, they are interested in punishing them.

In fact, not only to they oppose premarital sex and abortion, they oppose birth control for married couples too. Their goal is not to overturn just Roe, but also Baird. They want women barefoot and pregnant.

And the Morons Win the Pennant

It looks like Congress, knuckling under to knuckle heads, will continue to fund the fraud that is abstinence only education.

The reputable studies all show no effect on teen sex or pregnancy, and there are indications that it may increase the incidence of STDs, but the anti-sex right won’t let facts get in their way on their jihad against common sense.

The problem is that there is no political upside to being honest with our children.

An Interesting Twist on the Texas Polygamist Case

I really haven’t followed the story closely, but there appears to be an interesting development.

There are now indications that the 16 year old bride, the girl who allegedly made the phone call to authorities which resulted in the court order, may not exist.

It appears that authorities have been able to locate the girl, and the day after the raid, a similar call was made regarding another FLDS compound in Arizona.

This may make criminal prosecutions difficult.

Schadenfreude

It looks like Senator David Vitter will be called to testify at the DC Madame trial by the defense.

Apparently, Vitter did not do “sex”, just the fantasy service….if reports are true, something involving his wearing a diaper.

BTW, his lawyer is suggesting that he will take the 5th.

For what’s worth, in addition to Vitter, “Randall Tobias, a former senior State Department official, and military strategist Harlan Ullman, the father of the ‘shock and awe’ tactics are also on the list.

Heh.

Breaking: Abstinence Only Education Makes You Really Stupid

Another bit of news from the department of the blatantly obvious.

It appears that in their zeal to keep teens from having sex, abstinence education may be contributing to STD and pregnancies.

In the hit parade of abstinence only stupidity reinforced myths believed by teens:

  • Fla. Teens Believe Drinking Bleach Will Prevent HIV
  • Drinking Mountain Dew Will Stop Pregnancy
  • smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.

Is it any wonder that Florida has the sixth-highest teen pregnancy rate nationally?

Shorter Nicholas Kristof: Women Cannot Be Trusted With Their Bodies

Damn, this is really a day for incoherent NY Times editorials.

Along with the rest of the anti-sex anti prostitution crowd who think that and sex is icky.

Slowly, here is the equation: Pimps exist because prostitutes need them to protect them from a criminal justice system that victimizes them.

How is their job any different from bull semen “extractor”?

As to whether or not it’s “voluntary”, the claim that because of economic need, it’s not voluntary, means that I’m a slave.

I need the money.
