Well, It’s Not Like USA Today is a Newspaper

But does not mean that I’m not disappointed that USA Today declared Lawrence Yun, the chief economist at the National Association of Realtors as one of the top economic forecasters in the US.

Ummm….Covering your ears and saying, “there is no housing crash” does not make one a “top economic forecaster”. He is a paid shill of the realtors, and as such he only reflects reality to the degree that he doesn’t reveal himself as a complete and total pratt.

His record is worse than mine, though it might be better than his predecessor at paid shill for the NAR, David Lereah.

USA Today‘s Barbara Hagenbaugh and Barbara Hansen, and possibly their entire business journalism department, are my wankers of the day.

David Frum is a Lier, Marketplace Edition

I sent this to the good folks at Marketplace:

In David Frum’s essay yesterday about Federal reserve policy, he stated that he remembered, “the little white stickers my family’s favorite steak house used to overwrite last month’s price”.

I would make two points here.

First, Mr. Frum is born and bred in Canada, specifically Toronto, Ontario, and it appears that the nearest American soil, Niagara Falls, New York, was about 80 miles away.

Given the number of steak houses available in Toronto, it is likely that the menu of which he spoke was for a Canadian restaurant, and using a Canadian restaurant to describe US inflation is not the basis for an honest discussion of any policy.

Second, this was in the days when plain paper copiers were a rare beast, so reprinting a menu was a significant issue, even if it was done only once a year.

This time he is doing it about a myth that has been debunked on Snopes, specifically he claimed in a speech that he “heard the tape” of the exchange in which an officer on an aircraft carrier demanded that a lighthouse change course.

In truth the Navy debunked this a decade ago.

Old Man McCain Has “Senior Moment” on Iraq and Iran

Yes, the sick old man, the one whose only claim to the presidency is his knowledge of foreign policy, claimed that Al Queida was being trained by Iran, and Joe Lieberman had to literally whisper in his ear to get him to correct it.

John McCain has no foreign policy experience, he just wants more war all the time, which is what the very serious people inside the Beltway&trade call foreign policy experience.

100 years more war in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and who knows where else this doddering old fool would take us.

Disgraceful.

Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Kendrick Meek have declined to support Democratic candidates running against Republicans incumbents in Florida.

Here’s the kicker. If you want a house leadership position, and Meek is a member of the 30-Something Working Group, and has been a vice chairman of the DCCC, and Wasserman Schultz is co-chair of the Red to Blue committee.

These are leadership positions. If you take those positions, you have an obligation to do your damn job.

I don’t care if your daughter is running as a Republican, and her alleged rapist is running as a Democrat, you work for the Democrat. If you can’t hack it, then go and be a back bencher.

We need to go after both of these folks in the 2010 primaries, hard.

However, Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the Rothenberg Political Report, which tracks political campaigns, said the lack of support from top Democrats could make donors leery.

”Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a favorite of leadership, somebody on the move,” Rothenberg said. “When somebody like that doesn’t want to be a major player in taking on a Republican, that’s a signal.”

Yet Rothenberg says the situation is not without precedent: He noted several Republican and Democratic senators from the same states honor nonaggression pacts.

Both Meek and Wasserman Schultz have benefited from a close affiliation with the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC, which since its founding in 2003 has contributed $22,000 to Wasserman Schultz’s campaign committee and $10,500 to Meek’s.

Wasserman Schultz said the PAC support played no role in her decision, but she acknowledges she’s closer to the Republican incumbents on Cuba issues than she is to the Democratic challengers, who favor easing restrictions on family travel to the island.

Speaking as an Existentialist Jew, and yes they are compatible, when you create philosophies in which people are made unpeople, and in which the concept of personal responsibility for the world one creates is an anathema, you create another template for evil.

In this case, it’s USAF Gen. Michael Hamel, who feels the need to warn us about the extential threat that Google Earth poses to the United States.

“It could be as simple as how is it that an adversary gets an image off of Google Earth that could somehow threaten American lives or interests ….. “That is an example of a space threat that we may face in the future.”

And as a commenter said, “Right… and pigs can fly. Or rather, the good General may wish a Pig Ban because if pigs could fly they might somehow hurt US interests.”

I’m beginning to wonder why a disproportionate number of these mind-boggling stupid statements coming from generals seem to come from USAF generals.

The Legislature is looking at changing the law to allow for profit debt counseling services to operate in MD.

The change is being driven by Columbia based AscendOne Corp.:

AscendOne’s business practices are being reviewed by attorneys general in Maryland and several states, government sources briefed on the investigations said. The sources asked to remain anonymous because the investigations are ongoing.

We have an industry with a reputation for dishonesty and fraud. One where the business is exploding because of the requirement for credit counseling under the new clusterf*** US bankruptcy law, so at the behest of one of the dubious actors in this dishonest industry, the legislature is looking at making things even worse.

Sounds like business as usual in Annapolis.

US Poised to F*&^ It Up Yet Again With DPRK

So, the US is now demanding some sort of “clear signal” in order for negotiations to proceed.

The problem here is that there are people in political positions, who I won’t name for fear that they will get drunk and shoot me in the face, who believe that negotiations of any sort are a victory for North Korea, and a defeat for the US, so the directives come down to keep erecting road blocks.

The North Koreans are not crazy. They are secretive, in many ways criminal, largely uncaring about the wellbeing of their population, and paranoid, but they are not crazy.

They honestly believe, and have believed for the last 50 years, that the US is planning a sneak attack against them in the hope of decapitating their regime and taking over their country.

Every time there is progress in discussions, and then the US creates another stupid hoop to jump through, it reinforces that belief.

This is well and truly stupid.
