Lockheed Patents ‘Spooky Radar’

It’s years away from fruition, but it appears that Lockheed has secured on a radar that uses quantum entanglement.

Basically, under some conditions in quantum mechanics, two particles are linked, instantaneously at significant distances from one another.

Makes my head hurt, which I stick to the larger world, where Newtonian mechanics serve just fine.

The ability to propagate radar signals at frequencies that are independent of the resolution frequency may allow quantum radar system 100 to attain near zero attenuation rates in the atmosphere, and greatly diminished attenuation rates in other media including foliage, building materials, earthen layers, etc. Quantum radar system 100, thus, can be adapted to visualize useful target details through background and/or camouflaging clutter, through plasma shrouds around hypersonic air vehicles, through the layers of concealment hiding underground facilities, IEDs, mines, and other threats–all while operating from an airborne platform or other suitable platform. Quantum radar system 100 may also improve the performance of advanced image processing and pattern recognition systems, as well as defeat most RF signature management systems when the propagation frequency is tuned to the resonant wave length of the target.

Indian AWACS

You have a report on India’s efforts to improve its surveillance and command control assets, where they appear to be heading towards a two tiered system.

First they are developing an AWACS system based on the IL-76/A-50 with Israel’s phased array Phalcon system in a conventional, though non-rotating dome:

They are also looking at procuring a smaller, somewhat less capable system, likely the EMB 145 Erieye:

The theory here is that this allows them to have more assets available at any given time, with the more capable assets only needing to be deployed where the improved capabilities (range, endurance, and more radar operators) are required.

Heh.

In this case, the Federal Court slapped down Comcast hard over its insistence that it needed an exemption from set top box interoperability rules.

More Proof of Cable Bandwidth Twiddling

I would appreciate some information on just how F%$#ed up the cable broadband providers networks are, because we now have the results of a study on BitTorrent blocking, and it’s only the cable providers doing it, and they (Comcast, Cox, and Starhub, a cable/internet provider in Singapore)are doing it regardless of network load, and they are the only ISPs to do this in the world.

A brief technical rundown why the cable network architectures providers’ suck is here.

Basically, the technology is not there, but instead of being open with their customers regarding limits, they are engaging in stealth filtering, and not particularly good stealth filtering at that.

I’m surprised, given the sterling reputation for customer service of the cable companies.

Revolutionary Aero Engine Concepts

Kind of a follow up to yesterday’s post, also sourced from Aviation Week (Paid Subscription Required)

Basically, these technologies involve unsteady combustion, specifically pulse detonation and wave rotors, which can, in whole or in part, use meticulously controlled combustion to replace a conventional compressor:

As with PDEs and pulse combustors, the wave rotor concept hinges on the idea of increasing the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine by producing a pressure rise during the combustion process. In conventional gas turbines, the pressure reduces as the gas is burned in the combustor, resulting in an entropy gain or a reduction in efficiency. In a wave rotor, combustion takes place via pressure waves in a confined volume within a series of tubes or channels. This means the pressure of the gas rises because combustion occurs inside a limited or constant volume, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the engine.

Although wave rotors and PDEs both rely on detonation shock waves traveling down the length of the tube to transfer energy, the two devices use this energy in slightly different ways. The PDE allows the blast wave to exit from the device as part of the propulsive effect, while the wave rotor merges successive waves to raise the pressure of the gas before it exits to the turbine stage.

The wave rotor consists of a series of tubes or passages arranged around the axis of a cylindrical drum which rotates between two fixed end plates. The plates contain the ports, or manifolds, which control the flow of the gas through the tubes. As the drum rotates, the ends of the channels are intermittently exposed to the ports which are at different pressures. This phase shift sets up the compression and expansion waves within the tubes as the mixture is ignited. The result is an expansion wave that travels into the gas and flows out of the wave rotor combustor into the turbine inlet at a total pressure more than 20% higher than that of the air delivered by the compressor.

As a result of the pressure gain from the wave rotor, more work can theoretically be extracted from the downstream turbine, increasing overall engine thermal efficiency. A key factor is that, as the combustion is contained within the tubes of the wave rotor, the pressure rise of the gas is not accompanied by a major increase in temperature, thereby keeping levels within the limits of the standard turbine materials.

Furthermore, experiments at NASA, as part of its ultra-efficient engine technology (UEET) study, indicate that because of the rapid expansion of the pressure wave, the gas temperature spends only a short time at or near stoichiometric conditions. As these represent ideal burning conditions for the fuel-air mix, they also coincide with the greatest production of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a major pollutant and focus for aviation emissions reduction efforts.

The wave rotor has the advantage that it smooths out the pulses before feeding it into a turbine.

Additionally, NASA is looking at pulsed propulsion for launch systems.

They are looking at a variable cycle engine where at slow speeds the afterburner would be fed by core air, and and at high mach numbers, would be fed off the fan, which is vaguely similar to how the J-58 used on the SR-71 operated.

It has been suggested that a conventional afterburner be replaced with a PDE.

Evolutionary Aero Engine Concepts

The May 12 issue of Aviation Week, has some interesting articles on various advanced engine technologies under development in Europe (Paid Subscription Required) under the sobriquet Newac (new aeroengine core technology).

As opposed to some of the other initiatives, such as P&W’s geared fan, this is focusing on increasing the efficiency of the core, not the fan.

A basic description of the technologies that they are looking at are very aggressive active clearance management between the case and the turbine blades to minimize losses, the use of intercooling (blue in picture above) and heat exchangers (green in picture above) increase turbine inlet temperatures while keeping flame temperatures lower (less NOx, also called “exhaust heat recuperation”), and aggressive management of cooling air to minimize losses.

The intercooling and recuperation are actually not new technology, they have been used in stationary turbines for years, but its application to aero engines is new.

Verizon Supports Linux for Handsets

Some people were expecting them to go with Google’s “Android”, but there are some reasons to go LiMo:

  • It’s further along, with some handsets deployed.
  • After Google’s driving up the bidding high enough to require open access in the spectrum auction, Verizon wanted to do a “screw you” to them.

According to my friends in the biz, Verizon is the most locked down of the carriers….We’ll see how it proceeds.

India Budgets $2.5 Billion for Manned Space Program

It appears that India is making a major push into manned space flight. (Paid subscription required)

They are looking at a first flight in the 2015 time frame with some significant collaboration with the Russians.

This to my mind is the least sensible way to spend money of space flight. They are already spending significant amounts on reconnaissance and imaging satellites, which meet actual needs, as opposed to perceived status in the world.

More A400M Delays

It looks like the first flight of the EADS A400M airlifter will will be delayed again (paid subscription required).

Once again, it is all problems with the engine, with the C-130 testbed not ready yet to fly, and the #1 aircraft will not be flying with final the high pressure compressor, which is in redesign:

The CEO admits that a number of issues could push the flight date out further. The most critical involves the software on the full-authority digital engine control which he said is three times as complex as that on the Airbus 380. Feedback from engine ground tests and static tests, which started in March, will also be critical. ­Suarez says the engine will total 1,200 hours on the bench by the end of May.

I would assume that the FADEC also includes blade pitch.

Of course, if they had bought the AN-70, it would be already for flying for less money, and if they had gone with the US engine proposal they might be flying already.

Really, I’m serious on this, though this could come as no surprise. It is the organizational imperative for law enforcement to ask for permission to spy on everyone all the time without oversight, as FBI Chief Mueller states:

I think legislation has to be developed that balances on one hand, the privacy rights of the individual who are receiving the information, but on the other hand, given the technology, the necessity of having some omnibus search capability utilizing filters that would identify the illegal activity as it comes through and give us the ability to preempt that illegal activity where it comes through a choke point as opposed to the point where it is diffuse on the Internet

Obvious issue that the US does not own the internet, and it appears from his statements that he wants to be able to shut down the traffic with no judicial review, whether it be a BBS that they determine to be “terrorist”, or illegal betting in the form of an office “March Madness” pool, or fantasy baseball.

They will also be able to monitor what you buy at an online bookstore, and the content of your emails.

What’s more, in an increasingly politicized Justice Department, the possibilities for selective prosecution just boggle the mind.

And In the Conuing Tradition of Fanboi Pimping for SAAB

It appears that SAAB has a pretty competitive entry into the smaller AEW field, the Saab 2000 Airborne Early Warning (AEW) system:

SAAB had previously created a system for the Swedish Military based based on a slightly smaller member of this turboprop family.

The E-2 C/D from Northrop Grumman, and the IAI’s Conformal AEW (CAEW) based on the Gulfstream G550 airframe are its nearest competitors.

Northrop Grumman Wins BAMS

The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) has just been awarded to NG, beating Lockheed-Martin/General Atomics and Boeing/General Dynamics.

Basically it’s a large drone and sensor suite optimized for maritime work. NG and LM/GA’s bids were fairly typical (see picture below), and Boeing/GD had presented an “optionally manned” modified Gulfstream biz jet.
