I Wish I Knew the Back Story

No picture, but we were on I-695, just east of I-83, driving through an area of construction, and in the median strip, surrounded by Jersey barriers, was a guy firing up, or at least setting up, a gas barbecue grill.

So, he was setting out to grill Italian sausage, or maybe, they were workers heat treating something on site, I don’t know, but I will always wonder.

I was driving, so I could not take any pics, sorry.

OK, This is Stupid

This an April fools gag

This is someone doing WAY too many drugs.

ThinkGeek gets what they call, their best cease & desist letter ever, from the National Pork Board telling them that they are violating their trademark by describing Unicorn meat as, “The other white meat,” for which ThinkGeek, tongue planted firmly in cheek, apologizes:

“It was never our intention to cause a national crisis and misguide American citizens regarding the differences between the pig and the unicorn,” said Scott Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet. “In fact, ThinkGeek’s canned unicorn meat is sparkly, a bit red, and not approved by any government entity.”

Heh.

Deep Thought

A stint of unemployment, can make you wonder about whether or not one’s technical skills have gotten dulled in the interim.

Fortunately, there is no problem here. I picked up ProE as if I had not been off it at all.

On the other hand, I seem to have lost the ability to navigate my way through cubical farms.

At least 3 times a day, I walk back to my cube, and take a wrong turn, and end up at someone else’s cube, and this is just a medium sized office.

Being a man, I don’t ask for directions, of course.

Karma, Neh?

So, a preacher in Ohio with a lot of money and wacked priorities decides to erect a six plus story statue of Jesus, because helping the poor is for punks.

I imagine that he thought that God is much bigger into graven images than he is into helping the downtrodden.

Well, the score is now God:1, religious and self-aggrandizing nut-job:0.

Lightning struck the statue and it burned to the ground. Doubtless the preacher won’t even feel a shred of doubt though.

Posted via mobile, which is why I am not composing a filk of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” (“Smoke on the Jesus?”) for my blog.

Uh-Oh.

I don’t know what exazctly is going on, but the issuing of corproate bonds has basically fallen off a cliff in the past few days:

The corporate bond market is in the middle of a slump as the appetite for riskier assets has once again dwindled.

No companies issued corporate debt on Friday — the day before Memorial Day weekend — and only five sold bonds the day after the long weekend, according to Dealogic, a financial analytics firm. The last time that happened on a trading day was Sept. 4, 2009 — the Friday before Labor Day weekend.

While this could be partially attributed to the Memorial Day holiday, the slump in corporate bond sales, coupled with rising prices to insure those bonds against default, could be signs that credit markets are tightening again.

I’m a cynic, so my guess is that the insiders know something, but I am not sure what.

Nevada Banns Chicken Suits from Polling Places

The headline is actually rather more interesting than the story.

You see, like most states, Nevada bans electioneering within a certain distance, 100 feet in this case.

This applies to things like campaign T-shirts, buttons, etc.

Well, because of Republican front runner Sue Lowden’s statements about bartering chickens for medical services, state elections officials have banned chicken costumes and chicken memorabilia from the “no electioneering” zone:

Nevada banned people wearing chicken costumes from polling places around the state on Friday.

The state election commission does not want the costumes or other poultry-related memorabilia to prevent mocking of Republican Senate candidate Sue Lowden, who wants to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D).

I approve of their decision. The presence of chicken related items is electioneering in this context, so their decision is correct in both the strict legal sense, and in the more general context.

Still, it’s a weird hed, ain’t it?

I Suppose that this Was Inevitable

Could it be ………… Satan?

GameStation, a UK video games retailer, has entered the final frontier of click-through licensing, it has added ownership of users immortal souls as one of the conditions of the agreement:

Popular UK video games retail company GameStation has claimed that the retailer legally owns the ‘immortal souls’ of thousands of online shoppers thanks to a clause in the ‘Terms and Conditions’ documents, which, sadly most customers don’t read before purchasing an item online.

GameStation reported that, as a part of the April Fool’s day gag, the retailer changed the online ‘Terms and Conditions’ form and added the so-called ‘Immortal Soul’ clause, which read that “By placing an order via this web site on the first day of the fourth month of the year 2010 Anno Domini, you agree to grant us a non transferable option to claim, for now and for ever more, your immortal soul.”

Unsurprisingly, very few people notices, and very few opted out of this requirement:

GameStation also offered customers a chance to reclaim their souls by clicking on the ‘opt out’ button at the end of the document.

However, out of the 8500 customers that visited the retail site on that day, only 12 percent of them managed to read the ‘Immortal Soul’ clause and swiftly saved their souls from damnation by opting out.

I think that it is clear that to the degree that Satan exists in the manner of Zoroastrian/Christian concept,* he is kicking himself for not having come up with this earlier.

*The idea of Satan being an entity in direct opposition to God is largely a Zoroastrian concept, which was adopted by Christianity. In Judaism, Satan is a title which means adversary, though perhaps a better translation is prosecutor, and is more the inclination to do evil than the guy with the horns and tail.

First, You Say Something Stupid, Then You Lie About It, but It’s On Video

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission.*

No, not Blumenthal, he fessed up in the back-handed way that pols do.

I mean Sue Lowden, who is a Republican running for US Senate against Harry Reid in Nevada.

First, she suggests that people should barter chickens for medical care, and does not have the good sense to say she meant, “Bargain,” and now she is denying that she ever said this.

The problem is that she has been caught on video repeatedly making just such a statement, so let’s roll tape, specifically the inestimable Rachel Maddow.

The first rule is that when you are in a hole, stop digging.

The former anchor woman turned politico brings to mind the immortal Don Henley lyric, “We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blond who Comes on at five, She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam In her eye.”

In any case, she may be Harry Reid’s electoral salvation.

Well, Here is a Blast from My Web Past

Around 1995 0r so, I really do not recall when exactly, I decided that the web was just too useful for me to compete on utility, so I would compete on uselessness.

So I created, hand coded, because that was the way then, a web page dedicated to bad hair days.

Originally, it was just me, you’ve seen the picture, it’s in the right column, and Al (Einstein, that is, the patron saint of bad hair).

Well, I realized that not only did the Internet completely out-class me in useful things, but it completely outclassed me in useless things, so it never went that far.

That being said, I did add one other public figure, just 12 days before September 11, 2001, James Traficant, who had arguably the worst hair in the 200+ year history of Congress.

Mr. Traficant was subsequently tried and convicted for matters unrelated to his hair, corruption, and expelled from Congress.

Well, He’s back!!!!!!

After serving 7 years for bribery, he is running for his old seat as an independent in his old district in Youngstown, OH.

Same as it ever was……

I’m Henry VIII I Am

Well, not exactly, but it appears that my 2 weeks on Doxycycline has given me gout in my left big toe.

One of the triggers for gout is a sterile digestive tract, which the drug has delivered in spades.

I went to the urgent care clinic, and after a bit of a wait, got a quick diagnosis from the doctor.

I’m on Indocin, which is basically industrial strength Ibuprofen, and Colchicine, which is some weird stuff derived from the Autumn crocus.

The instructions for Colchicine say, “Take 1-2 tablets every 2 hours until pain stops, or nausea-vomiting-diarrhea.”

I just the Wiki on Colchicine. Great googly moogly. This is nasty stuff, as in a fairly potent cellular toxin when used to excess..

I’m taking my meds, and another acidophilus to deal with the “sterile digestive tract,” and heading to bed, thank you very much.
