People Who Need to Get a Life, Or At Least a Sense of Humor

The American Medical Association (AMA):

Last week, the advocacy arm of the powerful physicians’ group unleashed a tsk-tsk campaign against “The Incredible Hulk,” a Marvel film that opened on Friday and is distributed by Universal Pictures. The complaint was of “gratuitous depictions of smoking.”

In the movie, which drew a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, General Thunderbolt Ross, a bad guy played by William Hurt, is rarely seen without a smoke-spewing cigar. (Presumably, the physicians’ association worries that children who identify with the authoritarian general — who wants to annihilate the Hulk, played by Edward Norton — may be tempted to pick up the habit.)

Dianne Fenyk, president of the advocacy group, AMA Alliance, is particularly infuriated because General Ross did not smoke in “Hulk,” the 2003 film directed by Ang Lee, though he always smoked in the comic books. …..

Dianne Fenyk is arguably the 2nd most overemployed induhvidual in the United States.

Why We Love The Rude Pundit

I haven’t formed an opinion on the Veepstakes, so I am not endorsing this line of reasoning, but I am certainly amused:

A Few Observations From Last Night’s Big Speech Threefer:
– No way, no how, not on this planet, not in this galaxy should Obama have Hillary Clinton on the ticket. That’s what Obama needs: a Vice President who believes she should be President, with the added bonus of having Bill Clinton wagging his pussy-ready finger at everyone whenever someone says something mean about his wife. It’d be a big, stupid mistake, akin to a family of lemurs inviting a boa constrictor over for dinner.

This guy is priceless.

Yes, Myanmar, There is a Panty Clause

Not sure if I can add much to this:

Panties sought for Myanmar protest

Two Canadian human rights group in Quebec are calling for women to mail panties to Myanmar’s embassy to protest the ruling military junta.

The Quebec Women’s Federation and the activist group Rights and Democracy claim the secretive military leaders in the country formerly known as Burma are superstitious and believe contact with women’s underwear will usurp their power, CTV News reported.

I End Up on Some Odd Mailing Lists

I get email from the “Minaret Foundation” a, “A free market Muslim perspective on economics, democracy, terrorism and Middle East conflict”, because I asked some questions via email regarding an article on the Medieval sugar trade.

Now I find this in my inbox, because I guess someone did a Technorati search on me.

Needless to say, trip to Iran is not on my agenda.

OK, I’m looking for an old comment of mine on haloscan, which I could not find, but I found this:

Susan and Michael Mukasey Marriage Profile

With their family beside them, Michael and Susan Mukasey stepped into the media spotlight when it was announced that he had been nominated as attorney general. Here’s information about their long-lasting marriage.
Born:
Michael B. Mukasey: July 28, 1941 in New York City (the Bronx).

Susan Bernstock:

Wedding Date:
Michael and Susan were married in New York City on July 14, 1974. According to a wedding announcement in the New York Times, Rabbi Judah Nadich performed the ceremony at Susan’s parents’ home.
Children:
Michael and Susan have two children and two grandchildren.

  • Marc Saroff Mukasey: Married to Nancy Eve Rothenberg on 3/19/1994 at the Pratt Mansions in New York. Both Marc and Nancy are lawyers.

  • Jessica Mukasey: Married to Corey Barkoff. They have two sons.
Occupations:
Michael: Attorney General, attorney, federal judge, and federal prosecutor.

Susan: Former teacher and headmistress of Ramaz Lower School.

Previous Marriages:
Susan was previously married to Mr. Saroff. The marriage ended in divorce.

My great grandfather came to this country named Saurymper (spelling varies), and he changed his name to Saroff for reasons that I don’t know.

He had one son, my grandfather, and my dad had 3 sons, and none of them were ever married to, Mukasey’s wife.

In fact, until my dad went East, we were exclusively a west coast clan.

Passover Finally Over

After 8 days, I’m seriously jonesing for some Chametz (leavened bread products).

Additionally, with my Orthodox Mother in Law here, we were in full no light switches, etc. mode for 4 of the 8 days of Pesach (actually 5 of 9, when one considers that Shabbat immediately preceded Pesach).

It’s a relief to be able to eat normal food again, though I feel kind of guilty at being relieved.

Years in the desert vs. a few days of eating bad food, I feel kind of wimpy complaining about it.

This is Most Unfortunate

It appears that the UK’s Office of Government Commerce’s new logo will be modified.

Some people have noticed a problem, see here:

Do you see the problem?

OK, tilt your head to the left……

A bit more…..

Nope a bit more…..

See it?

Needless to say, someone there need to take this issue well “in hand”, and get a “firm grip” on the situation.

Obviously, if this is what fourteen thousand quid buys from a graphics house in the UK, there is a problem somewhere.

Classics in Congressional Oversight of Defense Procurement

I have no clue why I missed this the first time, but I came across Steve Trimble’s Flight International blog post, and I realized that this is a classic of its kind.

Truth be told, Congressional oversight of defense procurement is not a particularly broad category, but this classic. Keith Olbermann should be notified.

The background: the USAF and Army aviation are both purchasing same cargo aircraft to do transport to austere airfields, the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA), and the aircraft selected was the Alenia C-27J.

It’s basically to serve the role as the C-130’s little brother, see pic:

The problem is that their budgets Army is saying that it will cost $30 million a pop, and the USAF is claiming that it will cost $60 million a pop.

Obviously something is very very wrong here. While differences in cost between services can result from differences in how life cycle costs are viewed, with one service looking to assign more of the lifetime costs to the initial purchase price than the other, a difference of 100% simply does not pass the smell test.

There are two obvious reasons that this might happen:

  • That one service is attempting to bring unrelated budget items in the procurement.
  • That one service is attempting to kill or minimize the purchase.

Given that this is a joint program between the USAF and the US Army, my money would be on both. They like bigger planes, and the thought of their sharing a program with the Army must give them the hives.

So Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) notices this discrepency, and decides to ask the USAF acquisition chief, Sue Payton, about this.

In any case, here is the meat of the exchange:

REP. ABERCROMBIE: Ms. Payton, you are right on the edge of getting into the Blues Brothers.

MS. PAYTON: Sorry sir, I don’t mean to be there. I —

REP. ABERCROMBIE: That’s when — when Jake says, Bill, but you lied to us about the band. They lied to me when I was in prison about the band. You haven’t kept the band together. He goes, I never lied to you. I bullsh$#ted you a little bit, but I never lied to you.

MS. PAYTON: Sir, I would never give any misinformation —

REP. ABERCROMBIE: No, you are saying that the Army is doing that.

MS. PAYTON: No, sir. I believe that —

REP. ABERCROMBIE: You are trying to finesse us. You are telling me they’ve got a cost that they know about, but they are not telling us about it, and are trying to pretend their unit cost and given information to us is the same as your unit cost, and they know better.

(Emphasis mine)

Somewhere out there, John Belushi is smiling.

You can see the rest of the exchange here, and Ms. Payton gets the worst of the exchange.
