Us Screwing the Pooch in Afghanistan

It appears that the Italy Foreign Minister is calling on the US to end operation Enduring Freedom in Afghaninstan.

The Italian foreign minister said Wednesday that the separate U.S.-led operation in Afghanistan overlaps with NATO’s mission and should be ended.

Massimo D’Alema, speaking to a parliamentary commission, said the NATO mission and the U.S. Operation Enduring Freedom raise problems of coordination, posing risks for the Afghan population.

His comments reflected recent NATO concerns that civilian casualties could undermine public support for the international security mission in Afghanistan.

Basically, this comes down to the fact that the US’s bomb-happy policies in Afghanistan are driving Afghans to the Taliban, and interfering with rebuilding and securing the country.

Basically, it appears that the US military needs adult supervision.

I don’t find this surprising. The US military has been disdainful of these sorts of operations since it adopted its post Vietnam mindset, as evidenced by steadfast refusals to apprehend people with credible allegations of crimes against humanity in Kosovo.

Russia achieves low-energy ignition of pulse-detonation engine-16/07/2007-Flight International

It appears that the Russians have made a significant advance in pulse-detonation engines (PDE).

A PDE is similar in concept to the pulse jet that powered the V1.

The differences are as follows:

  • No Moving Parts (pulse jets have shutters)
  • The flame front propogates through detonation as opposed to detonation (it’s a supersonic shock)
  • It promises higher efficiencies that existing propulsion.
  • It can operate from a stand still.

Indications of a PERMANENT Presence of US Troops in Iraq

This article makes it very clear that the United States plans to never leave Iraq.

The facilities involved are extensive, expensive, and permanent.

Inside spacious, air-conditioned “Kingpin,” a new air traffic control center at this huge Air Force hub 50 miles north of Baghdad……

Early this year, with little fanfare, the Air Force sent a squadron of A-10 “Warthog” attack planes — a dozen or more aircraft — to be based at Al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq. At the same time it added a squadron of F-16C Fighting Falcons here at Balad……

Those big bombers were moved last year from distant Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to an undisclosed base in the Persian Gulf…..

The weaker of Balad’s two 11,000-foot runways was reinforced — for five to seven years’ more hard use. The engineers next will build concrete “overruns” at the runways’ ends. Balad’s strategic ramp, the concrete parking lot for its biggest planes, was expanded last fall. The air traffic control system is to be upgraded again with the latest technology.

This folly is going to kill a lot of US troops. It fuels the insurgency.

Another Case of Flying While Brown.

An American Airlines employee, boarding an American Airlines flight from an American Airlines bus caused a flight cancellation because he appeared to be of “middle eastern origin”.

And we also have case of flying while a Cancer survivor, in which a woman was made to remove her prosthetic breast and check it through luggage.

It’s not just that this stuff is stupid. This stuff is counterproductive. DHS has, for reasonso of political expedience and incompetence, created an atmosphere where panic reigns, and this makes it easier, not harder for someone wishing to do bad things to succeed.

You end up with primate brain (terrorist) against lizard brain (panic).

This sounds very similar to the HOTOL concept in the early 1980s, and it appears that they are using cryogenic separation. They might save space and weight by using another form of oxygen separation, but they would still need the heat exchangers for making LOX.

A European Space Agency-funded study has concluded that air liquefaction plants for a space transportation system’s first-stage carrier aircraft are possible within the mass limits required.

The first stage would collect air, liquefy it and separate the nitrogen, producing 10kg/s (22lb/s) with a 10,000kg (22,000lb) on-board liquefaction plant.

The advantage of such a system is that the preferred liquid-oxygen propellant does not have to be carried from the ground. Once collected, the oxygen-enriched liquefied air is stored in the second-stage reusable orbiter vehicle.

The plant’s main mass drivers are the heat exchangers, of which there would be three. These have been a focus of the ESA study.

The study, involving Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), developed the two-stage launch system concept that incorporates liquefaction.

That system has a dual-hull, hydrogen-fuelled aircraft using six General Electric 90b engines as the carrier aircraft. Between its two fuselages under the wing, it would carry an orbiter vehicle fuelled only with liquid hydrogen with a total mass of 90,000kg.

AIM-9X Is Not All It’s Cracked up To Be

Physics says that the AIM-9X will have inferior kinematics (speed and range) and a smaller warhead than its competitor.

The AIM-9 is a 125mm (5″) diameter missile, while its competitors, the ASRAAM, Python 5, IRIS-T (I think), R-73 (AA-11), MICA, are all 150 mm+ (6+ inches), giving more than 40% internal volume.

This means more fuel and a larger warhead.

Additionally, when compared to the other thrust vectoring missiles, which have new motors which provide less thrust during the early thrust vectoring stages, and hence less thrust vectoring losses, the motor is less efficient.

There is also the argument that with an agile airframe, and a seeker that has a wide scan angle, you can get the same effects, which is what the Python 5’s game, and/or using the capability of locking on after launch (ASRAAM largely operates in this mode) to achieve similar targeting, because all these missiles require that the platform pass pretty detailed information on the target, typically with a helmet mounted sight, to the missile in order to engage off boresight targets.

None of the larger missiles even fit in the F-22 side bays for IR missiles, and once one is in a visual encounter, the F-22 has lost a its advantages of stealth and super cruise, so the USAF probably sees this as a weapon of last resort (the cannon is more for that random enemy truck convoy that happens by).

That being said, this is a neat video.

The Russians have the cheapest plane of the lot, and transitioning crews and maintenance personnel from MiG to MiG should be easier.

As to the price issues mentioned at the end, I would think that the F-16 would be the next cheapest, but I think that the Gripen would be cheaper than the F-18E/F.

I’ve always been a fan of the Gripen, so that may color this.

Additionally, the US might use export restrictions to attempt to kill a potential Gripen sale.

They tried this is South Africa, when they attempted to use export restrictions to get them to buy a US plane, but the response from South Africa was to forbid any US companies from bidding on Defense contracts, and the US relented.

Huge Indian Fighter Jet Tender Enters Final Stage

A scramble for a piece of the world’s largest fighter plane deal in over a decade moved into its final stage Friday with India examining the final bids from global weapons giants.

Indian defense ministry and industry sources said the choice appeared to have narrowed down to the Russian-built MiG-35 and MiG-29 aircraft, and U.S. offerings the Lockheed Martin F-16 and Boeing F-18.

A top defense procurement committee meeting had been expected to result in an announcement of the vendor of the 126 war planes, but an official statement late on Friday only said the tender has been “fine-tuned.”

The deal is potentially worth $9 billion to $10 billion.

Also in the race to replace a chunk of India’s aging fleet of 700 MiG-21s are Eurofighter’s Typhoon, Saab’s Gripen and Dassault’s Rafale and Mirage — although price considerations have left these contenders at a disadvantage, defense officials and industry sources said.

FWIW, the counter-torque is done with rudders in the propulsion propeller.

I’m thinking that allowing the main wing to pivot might allow for greater hover capability.

Piasecki Aircraft has flown the X-49A experimental compound helicopter for the first time. The modified Sikorsky YSH-60F, with wings and tail-mounted variable-thrust ducted propeller (VTDP), made the 15min flight on 30 June at Boeing’s Wilmington, Delaware test centre.

The first flight involved hovering, pedal turns and slow forwards and sideways flight using the Piasecki-designed VTDP for anti-torque, directional and trim control, says vice-president John Piasecki.

Aire Force Jumps on Next Gravy Train

The problem here is that the USAF has never done well supporting troops on the ground, and this is best folded unto US Army operations.

This is really about the USAF trying to make sure that it’s on the gravy train as the US military is redefined for likely conflicts, counter-insurgency (COINS), where the latest USAF whiz bang gets you no advantage.

The F-22, F-35, new tankers, bombers, etc. have NO additional utility relative to legacy systems in COINS.

US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) planners have called for the stand-up of a new “irregular warfare” wing dedicated to fighting insurgents and terrorists with an aircraft fleet numbering 44 airlifters, 20 helicopters and 20 turboprop strike fighters.

The irregular warfare wing concept seeks to introduce the first dedicated strike aircraft for fighting insurgent forces since the Douglas A-1 Skyraider in the Vietnam war.

“One possible candidate for the light strike role is the air-to-ground modified [Beechcraft] AT-6B. Other candidate aircraft include the [Embraer] Tucano or Super Tucano,” the AFSOC paper states. The authors add that a Cessna Caravan “might be useful as a light mobility, strike, or intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft depending on its configuration”.

Perhaps more important than the light strike component, the new wing should operate four Lockheed Martin C-130s in a “heavy mobility” role, as well as 20 medium lift and 20 light mobility aircraft. The latter can be comprised of Cessnas or EADS Casa C-212s, while the former might be the Alenia Aeronautica C-27J Spartan Joint Cargo Aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney has begun studies of open rotor engine architecture despite its long-standing pursuit of geared turbofan (GTF) technology, and does not rule out shifting to a propfan configuration if this path is favoured by the airframers.

The company is developing a GTF engine to power the next generation of regional and single-aisle aircraft. This engine’s low-pressure spool operates at high speeds for peak efficiency, while its fan operates at slower speeds to maximise efficiency and significantly reduce noise.

Cessna has reached and agreement with Germany’s Thielert Aircraft Engines (TAE) to collaborate on future programmes centred on the Thielert diesel engine.

Although both companies are remaining tight-lipped on specific developments, the first programme is likely to be a 135hp (100kW) Centurion 2.0-powered version of the 172 Skyhawk.The engine is already available as a retrofit on the piston single type, but the venture is the first time Cessna will offer a diesel version as standard.

Cirrus Design has taken the wraps off its first jet, and the manufacturer of the popular SR22 piston-single light aircraft is bracing for a major sales boost.

Seating up to seven people, “the-jet” has its single Williams FJ33-4 turbofan mounted above the fuselage and exhausting between the V-tail, in a similar arrangement to the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft.

“We’re not going to be a smaller business jet. We’re trying to be a bigger SR22,” said CEO and co-founder Alan Klapmeier at the 28 June event.

As for price, Klapmeier says: “Our goal is to have it be about $1 million”. The final price is uncertain, he cautions, since the certification date is unknown along with many other factors.

The fuel capacity will be “well over 1,000lb”, depending on the number of passengers, and range will be more than 1,000nm with only one pilot aboard and less than that when carrying seven people.”

MiG-35 Details Given

My money is on India going with Russia, they already have a lot fo the support infrastructure there.

Also note that the Mig-35, Su-27 variants, Typhoon, Rafale, and Gripen are all offering AESA upgrades.

The USAF is billing as a great ace in the hole, and it seems not so tough to do.

Bangalore air show: MiG-35 makes debut at Aero India

RSK MiG chose Aero India to display the MiG-35 publicly for the first time. A land-based version of the Indian navy’s MiG-29KUB, the aircraft was first flown last month. The MiG-35 is being offered to meet the Indian air force’s requirement for 126 multirole fighters.

The MiG-35 is first Russian aircraft fitted with an active electronically scanned array radar. The Phazotron-NIIR Zhuk-MA was publicly revealed by removing the aircraft’s nosecone. The Zhuk-MA’s antenna consists of 160 modules, each with four receive-and-transmit modules. It is believed to offer a 160km (85nm) air target detection radius and 300km for surface ships. ….

The MiG-35 is powered by two RD-33MKBs that can be fitted with KliVT swivel-nozzles and a thrust vectoring control (TVC) system. …..

Flightglobal.com has obtained pictures of the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner headed for the paint shop earlier this week at Boeing’s assembly plant in Everett, Washington. The aircraft is scheduled to be formally rolled out on 8 July (7/8/7 using the US date convention) and fly for the first time in August or September. Entry into service with launch customer, All Nippon Airways, is slated for next May.

Russian manufacturer RSK MiG is offering the ultimate prize for the aviation enthusiast – a trip to Russia and a flight in a MiG-29. The prize is on offer to the lucky person who can come up with names for the four new aerobatic manoeuvres flown by the unique vectored-thrust MiG-290VT in its Farnborough display (pictured below).

The prize is available to visitors to the air show, where the aircraft is the star of the flying display. RSK MiG is asking spectators to name the four new manoeuvres flown by the Russian air force’s Swifts aerobatic display team by dropping into the manufacturer’s chalet. With an array this large, resolution could be very good, and it’s likely that it might have significant stealth detection capabilities.

The resolution of a radar is proportional to the size of the antenna, and the resolution attained here should be sufficient to pick up almost anything.

Conformal radar arrays that a year ago were only concepts are now being prototyped. Large apertures are being designed as skin to hug the complex curves of aircraft wings and fuselages.

A massive structure under construction by Raytheon will form one side of a three-football-field-long airship. About six million elements will make up the 6,000-sq.-meter antenna, says Mark Hauhe, a senior fellow working on advanced radar concept demonstrators.

News Flash: Air Force Hates Helping Soldiers On the Ground

The real story here is that the USAF really, REALLY, REALLY hate doing anything that smacks of close air support. They have since the creation of the USAF.

It’s fighters, and strategic bombing, with perhaps a bit of tactical bombing that they want to do.

It’s embarrassing to do close air support. After all, some sergeant is telling an officer what to hit and where to drop bombs.

Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and pod-equipped combat jets to find improvised explosive devices (IEDs) is often a misuse of time and resources, said U.S. Air Force Gen. Ronald Keys, commander of Air Combat Command.

Often, requests for airborne surveillance are based on the assumption that such aircraft help find IEDs and save ground forces from such attacks, he said. Certain military leaders feel they need the full-motion video feeds to locate the explosives. The truth, he said, is much different.

Based on Air Force analysis, the number of IEDs found by UAVs, surveillance aircraft or combat jets outfitted with advanced targeting pods per 100,000 flight hours is very low, according to Keys. “It’s a waste,” Keys said June 20 during a morning keynote speech at the Transformation Warfare 07 conference and exhibit in Virginia Beach, Va.

“People come to me and tell me they want a Predator,” he said. “I ask, ‘What are you looking for?’ Tell me what you’re looking for, don’t just tell me you want a J-STARS.”

Unfortunately, the military is basing some of its decisions on anecdotes instead of real metrics, he said. Indeed, the only metric being used is whether the Air Force is meeting certain tasking orders, instead of making sure those assets and flights are effective and the best use of time and aircraft. “This is no way to fight a war,” he said.

Keys said ACC has developed a “concept of deployment” to help fight IEDs that is air-centric “to a certain point.” Without going into specifics, he said, “We ought to be attacking the system – to the left of ‘the bang,'” meaning the process before the IED is emplaced. What needs to be looked at is the network, “not the thing that’s buried out there,” he said.

Sukhoi plans aggressive flight test and weapons integration schedule for latest Flanker version

Fighter manufacturer Sukhoi is trying to persuade the Russian government to contribute development funds for its latest version of the Su-27 Flanker family, the Su-35, with indications that the air force has already decided to acquire the aircraft.

Three Su-35 prototypes are initially being manufactured, with a first flight planned by the end of September, according to a senior Sukhoi executive involved in the program. “Currently, there’s no government funding,” he says. “The program so far is being funded by industry participants.”

The first aircraft, No. 901, is now complete and undergoing ground tests. It’s slated to be at the Moscow air show in August, before beginning flight trials. The company has an ambitious flight test and initial weapons integration plan that it aims to finish by 2010, followed by the first aircraft being handed over to the air force.

The Su-27 derivative will certainly include systems also destined for the T-50. It will also provide the air force with an interim fighter should–a distinct possibility–the time scale for introducing the PAK FA into service be extended. First flight of the T-50 is penciled in for 2009.

It’s not clear in the picture, but there appears to be a fairing on the aft end of the large missile hanging on the right hand (left of picture) pylon. This might be an air intake.

Given the Russian experience with solid fuel ramjets, the SA-6 had one in the early 1970s, the range of this AIM-54 sized Phoenix sized missile could be rather long.
