Univision has taken a controlling interest in the satirical publication The Onion:

The Spanish-language media giant Univision Communications announced Tuesday that it had acquired a large stake in The Onion, the comedy and satirical digital media group, as part of the company’s efforts to extend its digital reach and strengthen its portfolio of comedy outlets.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the transaction was said to be for a 40 percent stake, valued at less than $200 million, according to one person briefed on the deal.

“Comedy is playing an expanding role in our culture as a vehicle for audiences to explore, debate and understand the important ideas of our time,” said Isaac Lee, chief news and digital officer of Univision. “It has also proven to be an incredibly engaging format for millennial audiences and is expected to play a key part in the 2016 presidential election process via our robust content offerings in Spanish and English.”

Univision’s digital portfolio is undergoing a flurry of changes, part of an effort to build its footprint and reach as diverse a group of millennials as possible. News emerged last month that Univision was in talks with the Walt Disney Company to take full control of their joint venture Fusion, the English-language digital news service and cable channel. In November, Univision named Mr. Lee to a new position with responsibility for overseeing digital functions, leading multicultural efforts and creating a music strategy. He also is chief executive of Fusion.

According to NPR 40% is a controlling interest.

I have no f%$#ing clue how Univision plans to make a coherent business plan out of this.

My guess is that they don’t have a plan, and notwithstanding promises to have a light touch, management will eventually feel compelled to bring it under the corporate wing, when they don’t experience the requisite “Synergies”, and then they will ruin it.

It’s Tough When Your Sick Fantasy is Revealed as a Sick Fantasy

I am, of course, referring to the “Good guy with a gun” myth.

Jordan Klepper at The Daily Show looks at the efficacy of that mythical figure in some paint ball scenarios.

It ain’t pretty.

He gets shot by the gunman, shoots innocent students, and finally gets shot by the police.

Way too many of the ammosexuals have this fantasy of finding a bad guy and shooting them.

That crazy woman who unloaded a clip at a bunch of fleeing shoplifters is a classic example: It wasn’t about her trying to help, it was about her seizing an opportunity to go Rambo with her pistol.

Because Comedy Central vids autoplay on some platforms, I have put the video after the break:

Tervor Noah’s Debut

I watched his debut as host of The Daily Show, and it was a real stem winder.

I am seriously impressed.

It was funny, he made some fun of himself, and he was a bit bluer than John Stewart.

Obviously, this show was the product of many weeks of prep, so I expect some hiccoughs as they go from debut to routine, but it is a very good start.

I will note that he has not yet made my list of People I Do Not Want to Piss Off yet though.

I Worked Up Some Presidential Nicknames

Just the Democrats, because there are too many ‘Phants to name, and new Republican candidates keep popping up like some twisted game of Whack-a-Mole.

It’s one of those things that happens when we are all on a drive of any length.

Here goes:

  • Miss Congeniality (Hillary Clinton: Likable enough, but she is not going to win.)
  • Who? (Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island)
  • The Republican running as a Democrat (James Webb, who opposes the Iran nuclear deal, supports the Confederate flag, etc.)
  • Too dull for a nickname (Martin O’Malley)
  • The Berninator (Bernie Sanders)

If you have any suggestions, feel free to contribute them in the comments.

Jon Stewart Just Hurt Me

You can see the many hairstyles of Bernie at Buzzfeed

He is, of course, in reruns now, but he was doing his monologue, and I had had not heard it before.

And then he said:

Sure, Bernie Sanders is drawing crowds in the thousands, but for some reason the ‘media’ has decided you can’t be a serious candidate if your hair looks like your dick got caught in an electrical socket.

I started laughing, and I just had to share this with Sharon.*

So, laughing hysterically, I started up the stairs, but I could not catch my breath I was laughing so hard, and ended up falling down the stairs.

Thankfully, nothing but some bruising minor bruising, and a majorly freaked out wife.

Actually, it freaked out my cats too.

As I lay at the bottom of the stairs, giggling, Destructo was staring at me with obvious concern.

I’m OK, just a bruise on my left radius and wrist.

*Love of my life, light of the cosmos, she who must be obeyed, my wife.

Day 104

I haz a sad.

I just watched the series finale of Phineas and Ferb, and I already miss the show.

Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Dan Povenmire, the creators/show runners next project will be
Mikey Murphy’s Law,* and I, as well as the rest of my family, will wait for this with bated breath.

*The concept of this show is that it is the adventures of the great, great, great, great, great, great, grandchild of the creator of Murphy’s Law.
Technically, this is historically inaccurate, because the term Murphy’s Law has its origins in rocket sled tests at Edwards AFB in the early 1950s.

F%$# Them if They Can’t Take a Joke

Sepp Blatter is still running FIFA, and he just fired FIFA’s public relations weasel for telling a very funny joke about the current scandal:

Fifa communications director Walter De Gregorio has been sacked after sealing his fate with a joke about the governing body on Swiss TV.

Gregorio told Swiss chat show Schawinski: “The Fifa president, secretary general and communications director are all travelling in a car. Who’s driving? The police.”

Fifa announced in a statement that De Gregorio had “relinquished his office”.

But the BBC understands he was asked to leave by president Sepp Blatter.

Sorry, but this is funny, and Sepp Blatter is such a delicate flower.

It’s amazing how sensitive corrupt bureaucrats are.

Scott Walker Thinks that He is Princess Leia

Scott Walker tried to glom onto the “Forth be with you” Star Wars phenomenon.

I thought it was kind of lame, but the good folks at NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) put it in a way that is f%$#ing perfect.

Scottie is completely owned:

Why We Love Cats

If you do not see this, and think, “I love cats,” you are not truly a cat lover.

A dog lover says, “How can you love cats?  They are selfish, vain, narcissistic, and never come when they are called.”

A cat lover says, “How can you Not love cats?  They are selfish, vain, narcissistic, and never come when they are called.”

It’s a cat person thing.

Nice Job of Abusing Your Interns

Jonathan Chait decided to determine how many times that conservative legacy admission William Kristol invoked Hitler, Churchill, Chamberlain and Munich:

Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, writing in opposition to the Iran deal recently, observed, “One is reminded — as one so often is these days — of Churchill’s great speech in Commons after Munich … ” It is true that Kristol is often reminded of Churchill and Munich these days. This may not tell us anything about the current situation with Iran, however, since Kristol is reminded of Churchill and Munich on a great many days. It is a historic reference he has used to explain a great many episodes.

I recently asked New York interns Claire Landsbaum and Claire Voon to compile a list of Kristol’s public references to the Munich agreement and its main players. This research ordeal, presented in reverse chronological order, represents the sort of character-building exercise, I am sure Kristol would agree, that today’s youth badly need.

I’m sorry, I think that you are torturing Claire Landsbaum and Claire Voon.

Forcing them to read everything that Bill Kristol has written back to at least 1997 constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
