The band is Death, it was the Hackney brothers Bobby,Hackney, and Dannis.

I’m particularly surprised because I saw early punk as a pretty lily white phenomenon, and these guys are black from Detroit.

My Image of Punk is that it came from the UK, California, and New York, as personified by the Sex Pistols, the Dead Kennedys, and the Ramones.

You can get a cliff notes version of their career in this New York Times review of the recent Renaissance that the band has been experiencing.

In their first incarnation, their recption by local crowds was less than enthusiastic:

Death began playing at cabarets and garage parties on Detroit’s predominantly African-American east side, but were met with reactions ranging from confusion to derision. “We were ridiculed because at the time everybody in our community was listening to the Philadelphia sound, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Isley Brothers,” Bobby said. “People thought we were doing some weird stuff. We were pretty aggressive about playing rock ’n’ roll because there were so many voices around us trying to get us to abandon it.”

It’s a fascinating bit of musical history.

Surprise! Artist Revenues Increase

One of the claims made by the record distributors is that file sharing cheats the artists out of their fair share.

What’s left off of this statement is that it’s the job of the lables to cheat the artists out of their fair share.

What’s also left unsaid, at least by the music industry, is that the artists make more money in a world where we see widespread file sharing:

An even more striking thing, perhaps, emerges in this second graph, namely that revenues accrued by artists themselves have in fact risen over the past 5 years, despite the fall in record sales. (All the blue bars in the chart above represent revenues that go directly to artists. As you can see, the ‘blue total’ has risen noticeably.) This is mostly because of live revenues, but also because of the growing amount collected by the PRS on behalf of artists, which accounts for a much bigger chunk of industry revenues than most people realise.

The question about IP is whether it promotes, “the progress of science and the useful arts,” and it appears here that the Jihad by the record industry against file sharers does not.

Without the competition of easy file sharing, they would just take more from the artists, which would, in classic economics anyway, decrease the incentives for artists to produce music.

The file sharing campaigns are about keeping record executives’ worthless half brothers on the payroll.

You Mean They Were Still Playing

So, it appears that the band A-Ha is splitting up after 25 years.

I was never much on their big hit as a song, Take Me On, but the video was great:

I listened to the album Hunting High and Low, which is where the song came from when I was borrowing a car. The rest of the songs seemed a lot better, and had more substance

Go figure.

One other note, the actress in this is the quintessential big hair 1980s chick.

Same as It Ever Was

Same as it ever was,
same as it ever was,
same as it ever was

Here we go again. The flying monkeys are looking to impeach Barack Obama, with the usual suspects penning an article, titled, “Is it time to whisper the word ‘impeachment’?”

They claim that there is a, “The groundswell of calls for the impeachment of Barack Hussein Obama is growing” but those calls are the voices in their head.

This is what happens to people who believe that God has personally anointed them to rule, and I don’t think that you could drive Tom Delay’s penis between the mental space separating them from Osama bin Laden.

OK, This is Just Weird

Because I prefer Sinchronicity II to Sinchronicity

I’m talking with Sharon* last night, and we are talking about something, I don’t remember what, and I turn to her and deliver her the Samuel Jackson line from the movie The Incredibles, “Honey, where is my super suit?”

Today, I’m watching TV, and flipping, and there it is, and only about 5 minutes from the “super suit” line.

Stuff like this, where I’m humming a song that I’ve not heard in years in the morning, and hear it on the radio that evening, seems to happen to me about 2-3 times a month.

This is weird. Not only do I think that ESP is crap, but if it did exist, I would be a psychic black hole, I’m just not that sensitive.

I’ve got this weird Jung synchronicity crap going down.

Our Dumb Nation

So, a band came up with T-shirt, “Brass Evolutions, 2009,” but some creationist whack job parents objected so the assistant superintendent confiscated the shirts, because some parents, “don’t think evolution should be associated with our school.”

Since when did stupid people get the right to make the rest of us stupid?

What the administration should have done was contact the alma mater of said parents, and suggest that their diplomas be revoked.
