When I Think Back On all the Crap I Learned in High School
Kodak is ending production of its Kodachrome color film after 74 years.

Why I Love the Internet
Because I’m on a the the by invitation only Stellar Parthenon BBS, discussing record album cover art that kicks ass*, and someone notes that he thought that he would never hear a post-punk/new wave band called the Bush Tetras outside of some antique vinyl or old audio tapes, and posts a link to the Youtube for their song “Too Many Creeps”.
I’m sorry I missed them in their heyday. This is precisely the sort of stuff that I used to rock out to when I went off to college in 1980, and if this had come up in a conversation, I would never know that they sound like.
These little discoveries make the trolls all worthwhile.
*I still think that the Beatles “White Album” cover is the best record album cover ever.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
Republican Rap.
I couldn’t watch the whole thing….Great Googly Moogly!

Cello Scrotum A Hoax
It appears that a noted British doctor made up the condition and submitted it to the British Medical Journal in 1974, in response to reports, which she thought were a prank/hoax, of a condition called, “guitarist’s nipple”, which is or is alleged to be a chafed nipple from resting the guitar there.
Normally, I wouldn’t have cared, but I played cello when I was 9 and 10, before switching to trombone, so the hed made me want to read it.
Friday WTF?
System of a Down’s Chop Suey as done by Richard Cheese and his band Lounge Against the Machine.
My Mouth Writing Checks…..
So, I was at an Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) event.
The SCA is a medieval living history group, and the event was Day of Dance II & Bardic Bachanal.
It was potluck with dancing and bardic (music and story telling).
At the end of the evening, someone publicly thanked the musicians, and we all applauded, and then I shouted out, “Play Freebird.”
And damned if they did not start to play “Freebird”, on a guitar, a mandolin, a tenor recorder, and a bowed psalter…The lyrics were a filk, rather than the original, but the tune was there.
My life is complete now.
Because You Should Never Pass Up an Opportunity to Show Talking Heads Videos
So, I come across this story describing how Bush’s push for home ownership, aka the “Ownership Society,” was responsible in part for the housing crash.
I tend to agree with the Shrill One, when he says that Bush’s support of home ownership had the same role in the housing bubble as his support for marital fidelity did in the overall rate of adultery in the USA, and that his most significant contribution was in stripping away regulation that protected people from predatory lendors.
That being said, I cannot allow this quote go unanswered:
Then his Treasury secretary, Henry Paulson Jr., told him that to stave off disaster, he would have to sign off on the biggest government bailout in history. Bush, according to several people in the room, paused for a single, stunned moment to take it all in.
“How,” he wondered aloud, “did we get here?”
You just cannot read that and then not show a clip of the seminal music video from Talking Heads’ Once in a Lifetime.
Damn, I got Pwn36!!!!!*
Noah Shachtman writes on the likely Robert Gates reappointment as SecDef, and titles it, “Meet the New Boss…“
The Who is my favorite group. Townshend is my favorite composer.
And I missed the opportunity to highlight one of their iconic songs.
Damn.

Live and Learn: The Insane Makes Sense In Rock and Roll
We live in a strange world when the bizarre demands and moods of Rock and Roll musicians make sense.
In the first case, it’s the musician Prince, who for a while simply went by that symbol, and was referred to as, “The artist formerly known as Prince.”
What we all discovered when he dropped the affect, and went back to being “Prince”, was that this was one of the ways that he was attempting to wrest back control of his career from Warner-Chappell, and once the contract expired, he went back to using his name.
Then we have the case of Van Halen, who as confirmed by Snopes, required in their, “standard performance contract,” that they be, “provided with a bowl of M&Ms, but with all the brown candies removed.”
Again, when one looks at what Paul Harvey would call, “The rest of the story,” it’s a lot more than just a bunch of self indulgent rockers, as related by David Lee Roth in his autobiography:
Van Halen was the first band to take huge productions into tertiary, third-level markets. We’d pull up with nine eighteen-wheeler trucks, full of gear, where the standard was three trucks, max. And there were many, many technical errors — whether it was the girders couldn’t support the weight, or the flooring would sink in, or the doors weren’t big enough to move the gear through.
The contract rider read like a version of the Chinese Yellow Pages because there was so much equipment, and so many human beings to make it function. So just as a little test, in the technical aspect of the rider, it would say “Article 148: There will be fifteen amperage voltage sockets at twenty-foot spaces, evenly, providing nineteen amperes . . .” This kind of thing. And article number 126, in the middle of nowhere, was: “There will be no brown M&M’s in the backstage area, upon pain of forfeiture of the show, with full compensation.”
So, when I would walk backstage, if I saw a brown M&M in that bowl . . . well, line-check the entire production. Guaranteed you’re going to arrive at a technical error. They didn’t read the contract. Guaranteed you’d run into a problem. Sometimes it would threaten to just destroy the whole show. Something like, literally, life-threatening.
(emphasis mine)
So they had this provision to see if the proprietors of the arena actually read their contracts, because if they did not, there was a very real chance that things would go seriously wrong, and someone could get hurt or killed.
Live and learn.

Little Ice Age Gave Us Stradivarius Violins
They just put some Strads through a CT scanner, and they discovered that the wood is oddly uniform.
Specifically, the wood was exceptionally uniform in its density, and very dense, and this was because the wood was grown in the little Ice age, when the wood grew very slowly in all seasons.
Well, we now have yet another theory.
What Was the First Concert You Attended?
Jessica Valenti asks, “What’s the first concert you attended?”
Not counting events where the band was secondary, it was John Entwhistle on a solo tour, backed up by a pretty decent band called Rat Race Choir, who did a set on their own before he came on.
The opening act was called Gotham City, and was a bad Heart clone.
At The Channel, in Boston.
My Daughter Had a Concert at School Tonite
It was painful, though no more painful than any other elementary school art activity…Children are works in progress.
My daughter sang in “chimes” and was in the orchestra.
As to the part of the concert without her?
Let’s just say that the jazz band did a version of the Mickey Mouse Club theme as a dirge…….
Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!! Tekeli li!!!!!
Spinal Tap Gardener Dies in Bizarre Gardening Accident
Me bad, it was ABBA drummer Ola Brunkert who died in a bizarre gardening accident, not John “Stumpy” Pepys of Spinal Tap.
Yes, my joke is in very poor taste.
This is Funny, in a Very Sad Way
It appears that musicians are disappointed that they haven’t seen any money as a result of the royalty deals that Youtube cut with the RIAA.
They are expecting to get some money out of their record distributors?
What are they smoking????
Oh…Yeah…They are rock and rollers….That’s what they are smoking.
Seriously though, the RIAA does not, and has no interest in, raising money for the artists. They represent the record distributors, who make money by shafting the artists.
Depressing: Arlo Guthrie Endorses Racist Nutbag Ron Paul
Yep, Arlo Guthrie has endorsed Paul, a man who thinks the only thing that government should do is protect private property.
That sound you hear is Woody spinning in his grave.
A Good Point on the Music Industry
Cogitamus has a very good point on the music industry, when he looks at the RIAA’s latest VNR (Video News Release).
The RIAA is saying that if you find a mix CD that actually has the music that you want to listen to, it’s probably pirated.
So let me get this straight, in order for me to get the music I want in the format that I want, it has to be illegal?
Seems to me that this is a pretty good indication that the current legal music industry is absolutely worthless.
Chinese Food On Christmas
